    NES: Startropics

Ol' Mike's tropical adventure was my very first RPG. It was quite unique at the time. I enjoyed it quite a bit as a lad. I still can't get the opening tune outta me 'ed.

Yo-yo's BELONG in RPGs. Startropics and Earthbound are better because of them.

Yes, Startropics is on my list of the 10 best NES games. The interesting story and great puzzles kept me playing through the game 3 or 4 times. Even now I'm tempted to dig it out of my closet and play it again.

The one bad thing about the game was the difficult boss fight at the end. If you didn't find the secret weapon stashs and extra life pods, it was almost impossible to get to him let alone beat him.

Star Tropics 2 seemed to continue the style from the end of the game instead of the great first part of the game. The story was horid, the puzzles weren't fun, and the bosses were fustrating. It was like the designers had no idea what made the first game so great.

The Crown of Order demo is here.

I never played the second one. I like to pretend they only made one.

There's nothing in Startropics that would make me call it an RPG...

Let's see... world map, towns, overhead view of maps, dungeons, real-time battling... yep, I don't see why this shouldn't be classified as an RPG.

Super Mario World has world maps with an overhead view.
What a brilliant RPG that was~!

If anything Star Tropics is a LoZ clone. And a pre-emptive no.
The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

Yet it didn't have towns or dungeons in the RPG sense, did it?

Either way, I don't care who clasifies which as what. The point is to show luv fo' da ST, yo.

Wish I played it. I just remember having the Nintendo Power with Startropics in it and wishing I had it.

I like StarTropics too much to let you call it an RPG.

It has the best ending of an NES game eva.

Fine, fine. ST's not and RPG, clouds are made of candy, etc. So long as we agree it's l33t.

... come to think of it, I could use a cloud right now.

Just because a game has RPG elements doesn't make it an RPG. In Alladin you could increase your health bar. Does that make it an RPG. Are you seriously going to sit there and tell me that Alladin was an RPG? How can you sit there and try to tell me that Alladin was an RPG? Hey guys come look at this guy and his "Alladin is an RPG" schtick.

It was a joke up there, IRC. I stood corrected.
