Re: Good PSP RPG games that I should get?
Brave Story, Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, Jeanne D arc, D&D Tactics, Jewel Summoner(i like it atleast), Tales of Eternia (import), I personally like Aedis Eclipse: Generation of Chaos (the sequel), and Spectral Souls, although the loading times are atrocious.
Valkyrie Profile and Popolocrois are awesome too. Gurumin is kinda like an action RPG, but not reallyVita, 3DS, PSP, PS3, PC, WiiU, Wii & 360

Oops, somehow i double posted.
Oh, and i guess if you could stomach the GBA version of Riviera, then you would be okay with the PSP version.Last edited by Jeroak Nelave; 09-08-2007, 02:01 PM.Vita, 3DS, PSP, PS3, PC, WiiU, Wii & 360

Re: Good PSP RPG games that I should get?
Aedis Eclipse: Generation of Chaos: The sequel to Generation of Chaos which is 300% better than the original. It fixes the terrible slowdown in the battles, has a much better story, is longer, and there are more strategy and RPG elements as well as a better user interface. It's a pretty awesome mix between turn based strategy empire building and straight up rpg character building.
Brave Story: New Traveller: A PSP exclusive, it's a classic turn based RPG with a surprising character based storyline. The graphics are pretty phenomenal for a handheld (I'm talking Dreamcast quality here) and while the story isn't very original, the characters steal the show with great dialog and interaction that rivals Chrono Trigger (especially considering the main character is mute yet it still remains exciting).
Breath of Fire III: If you haven't played it on the playstation, of course. Some stores like Best Buy import it because it was a european release only.
Dungeon Maker: PSP exclusive, it's kind of like Dungeon Keeper for good guys. You build a dungeon to trap monsters then heroes pay you to hunt them. It's fun if you like Diablo-esque games and building your own dungeons like the Deception games.
Dragoneer's Aira: A PSP exclusive and a little underrated game, it's got a simple but intuitive battle system and lots of customization (create your own items, weapons, and magic). The characters and story are pretty "anime generic" (i.e. ditzy mage girl, solemn young knight in training, angsty swordsman, etc.) but it's an overall fun game.
Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony: PSP exclusive. I was expecting a cheap knockoff of Dungeon Siege but this is actually one of the best handheld Diablo-esque games I've played and it does a lot of unique things with the Dungeon Siege license.
Gurumin: A Monsterous Adventure: A port of a Japanese only pc game, it's a cute adventure game that I like to call "Cave Story in 3D." It's an action adventure game with plenty of action, cute characters, a pretty good story, great graphics, and tons of replay value in the fact that it has a dozen or so unlockables. I've replayed it six times already and there's still stuff I haven't gotten yet. It's kind of rare now but if you can find it, you won't be disappointed.
Jeanne D'Arc: Another PSP exclusive, it's a strategy RPG like Final Fantasy Tactics. Made by level 5, the story is a unique fantasy take on the 100 years war and the graphics are what you expect from the company (think Dragon Quest VIII cel-shading on a hand held). It's a beautiful game with decent writing (although the faux-french voice acting is a little annoying), great gameplay, and some of the best music I've heard out of the PSP's little speakers.
Kingdom of Heaven: A PSP exclusive and a decent action RPG. The voice acting is actually pretty solid and the game reminds me a lot of Jade Empire. My only problem is that your chi attacks are a little more powerful than melee attacks making the later game battles a bit one-sided.
Legend of Heroes series: A remake of old MSX games, they're pretty solid RPGs. The first one is pretty average but it will last you 50 hours, and the second and third ones are definite steps up in terms of writing and style that'll last you about 30-40 hours each.
Monster Hunter: Jewel Summoner: A nice addition to the PSP exclusive library. It's kind of like Shin Megami Tensei LITE in that it revolves around characters who summon and control monsters (although you never negotiate with them). It has a pretty humerous and light-hearted story so the game isn't exactly serious.
Spectral Souls: Another strategy RPG. It's pretty above average. There's a little slowdown in the larger battles, but it's a solid game. Still, I recommend Jeanne D'Arc over this.
Tales of Eternia: A european only release (although many American stores import it), it's a re-release of the American titled Tales of Destiny 2 (which was never actually the REAL ToD2). Everything about the ps1 version is the same.
Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology: A PSP exclusive that follows the reigns of the GBA tales of nakiri dungeon or whatever the heck it's called. It's basically a dungeon crawler hack n slash starring the tales characters like Stahn, Lloyd, etc.
Valhalla Knights: A PSP exclusive dungeon crawler. It's sort of like a Japanese version of Diablo although you can create a party of six or so. It's pretty average so I can only recommend it to crawler enthusiasts.
Ys: Ark of Napishtim: I find it better than the ps2 version as it doesn't have the slowdown or loading problems. It's a solid platformer/rpg although I've never been a big Ys fan.
PoPoLoCrois: Agetec did a good job translating this massive game. It combines two ps1 PoPo games and adds a new section based on the anime that bridges the gap between them. It starts off pretty slow but the last chapter (and the longest one) picks the game up and really helps carry it.
Riviera Story: The Promised Land: A decent remake of the GBA title. It features full voice overs (with the ability to use the japanese edition), fully redrawn graphics, and cd quality music.
Final Fantasy Tactics: A remake of the ps1 game due out in October. It features some new additions, sharper sprites and textures, cd quality music that's been remade for the PSP, and the most important thing A COMLETELY REDONE TRANSLATION. FFT was my favorite Final Fantasy game but the original translation was downright terrible.
Disgaea PSP: Due out sometime next month, it's a complete remake of the ps2 version with lots of bug fixes and new additions. There's even a completely new storyline called Etna Mode which is a "what if" story where Etna kills prince laharl in the beginning of the game and takes over the demon realm.

Re: Good PSP RPG games that I should get?
Basically, all of the best PSP role playing games are all ports of excellent Playstation 1 or 2 games: Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyrie Profile, Disgaea, and Breath of Fire III. As far as originals are concerned, if you exempt Jeanne D' Arc for it's high quality, then the remaining titles available for PSP range from average to terrible. The problems that most of these games share are ridiculously long load times, jerky camera angles, and poor control schemes. Not to mention that the PSP machine itself doesn't lend itself well to role playing game style considering it has a low battery life, and the games seems to adopt the same philosophy they do on consoles where somehow more hours of gameplay equates to more quality.

Re: Good PSP RPG games that I should get?
What you like in an RPG is all based on opinion but I haven't played a PSP RPG that I'd rate as [b]TERRIBLE[b]. There are some average ones, but most (even the originals like Brave Story and Dragoneer) are pretty above average. Only Breath of Fire III and Tales of Eternia are straight up ports; everything else is considered a remake as it offers a lot more than the original (although Valkyrie Profile is a different case because all it really offers new is voice overs and some cinematics). As far as load times go, maybe I've gotten used to cd games but I haven't played anything that takes longer than 4 seconds to load and the PSP's battery life is about 6 hours; about 40% less than the DS but I've never been away from an outlet long enough to really care. As far as controls go, most RPG's even on consoles share the same control schemes; you move with the analog and press X to confirm your actions... yeah.Originally posted by Cosmic Jeff View PostBasically, all of the best PSP role playing games are all ports of excellent Playstation 1 or 2 games: Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyrie Profile, Disgaea, and Breath of Fire III. I'm not defending bad games, I'm just saying that the animosity towards handheld games IN GENERAL is that they are inferior to console games... which is a ridiculous claim. If you buy handheld games to stimulate that need to play something on the 360 or ps2 then you're pretty stupid in my opinion. I buy handheld games to play when I don't have access to a console and they always satisfy. There's plenty of garbage out there, but when you consider that RPG games on the handhelds are incredibly rare, you have to appreciate what you get. The only RPG's I've seen on the DS are Pokemon and Hoshigami... and hoshigami is good remake of a bad ps1 game so you're SOL in that department.
