Pavilion's Choice: Best Shows and Concerts

So, last night I saw my current favourite group perform at a nice venue here in the city.

Their name is Animal Collective. I'm sure some of you know who they are; I'm sure some of you do not.

Anyway, they played an amazing show... a good blend of new and old and live-only songs on the set list. I thoroughly enjoyed myself even though I went alone ('twas something of a birthday present for myself). I knew I would though. I don't often find other people who know and love Animal Collective, so I was super excited to meet just about everyone I bumped (or danced) into.

This couple behind me were really getting into it, and I definitely fed off of their vibe. See, I'm usually a bit of a wallflower, but I was so excited for this show that I had no problem getting into the groove and dancing as if I were alone in my kitchen (I dance when I make breakfast). Anyway, they invited me for tea afterwards... I should have gone... but I had to catch the metro before it closed.

I also met an adorable hipster girl with a unisex name from North Carolina before the show. We had a good conversation about music, Montreal, and my opinions on people, and her opinions on art, and both of our opinions on high fructose corn syrup. We danced and eventually went our separate ways, but we exchanged numbers, so maybe we'll go to the tams together this Sunday.

Anyway, those were some of the major highlights. Oh, and I got a free beer. That was nice. Only "lowlight": I still don't have my full hearing capacity in my right ear back. Ech.

So, I'm sure some of you have some good show-stories to tell? Or, what shows have been your favourite? What shows are you looking forward to?

I'm looking forward to Miracle Fortress (playing tonight), Girl Talk and Dan Deacon (in a week), and Kid Koala (in a week and a half).

I will always kick myself for chickening out of seeing Beck live when he came into town. Turns out The Flaming Lips were his backup band and they put on an amazing show.

Damn, that sucks. When abouts was that? And why were you reluctant to go? (Not to further your self-calcitration.)

If it makes you feel any better, The Flaming Lips were one of the headliners at Bonnaroo this summer, and I was soo pumped to see them, then I ended up missing them because my loser friend wasn't having a good time and wanted me to walk her back to the campsite. Then I nodded off and missed the show.

This was more than four years ago during his tour for Sea Change, I think.

So it was probably before their puppet show schtick.

Hey, Kire, I haven't seen THAT many shows either. So what have you seen? Which were your favourites?

I've only seen one concert, modest mouse, it was kinda eh.

And I really don't like the idea of either going somewhere solely to get the snot beat out of me or being jammed packed shoulder-to-shoulder with a bunch of screaming assholes so I don't go to any shows either.

Shout It Loud 2007! My favorite band, Streetlight Manifesto, was there, as well as Reel Big Fish (!!!), Less Than Jake (!), and Against All Authority (...).

                      I'm a bum at shows.

I just stand there and listen. :/

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists are coming here next month. So they do a good show? I've only heard a select amount of tracks by Ted Leo, was the show more chilled out or bumping or somewhere inbetween?

                          Very bumping.

There was a lot of technical difficulty, but they still managed to play amazing. Ted Leo, at least at the show I was at, has a really good connection with the audience.

Since his new amp had blown out, he did an acappella encore, which was just awesome. My number one encore I've seen.

The last show that I went to was Modest Mouse, Clipse, Band of Horses, and Love as Laughter. It was cool. Modest Mouse was good, but they didn't really blow me away or anything. I'm a big fan of Band of Horses, though, and they were pretty awesome. I'd like to see them headlining a show, 'cause they only got to play five or six songs.

The Decemberists are really great live, and they're a lot of fun. I've seen them a few times.

I saw Ted Leo a little while back. He's amazing, as you'd probably guess if you know his stuff at all.

Explosions in the Sky is good.

Umm, Iron & Wine puts on a really good show to take a girl to, if you're into that sort of thing.

Those are the bigger shows that I can remember going to in the last year. I see a lot of local stuff, too. If you're into live music, you should definitely check out your local scene. I love the atmosphere of small shows, and there's some good music to find out there.

Animal Collective is my favorite currently existing band. Sounds like a great time.

Last big concert I went to, I think, was Secret Machines. They were kinda crap live and their opening band Autolux blew them outta the water.
