The Nintendo DS: Still Kicking Ass

Hardware sales in Japan for the week of April 18 - 24
    # Nintendo DS - 96,191 units
    # PlayStation 2 - 33,080 units
    # PlayStation Portable - 33,004 units

in the US, Sony has yet to sell the first million PSPs. only 600,000 of the initial US shipment have been sold, meanwhile, Nintendo recently passed 5 million Nintendo DS sold worldwide.

for all you people thinking the PSP would crush the DS right out of the gate, well...

not bad for a gimmick system, eh?

Sold out here for weeks, the PSP that is. We have more DSs than we know what to do with.

seems to vary by area. there are more PSPs sitting around here than DS. my local target has 10 PSPs and 3 DS. Plus, nintendo is still manufacturing the DS, thus there is a large supply. sony has yet to produce the second run of US PSPs.

Of course its selling more than PS2, PS2 is very old, almost everyone has one by now.

I don't like Nintendo DS much, but I'm sure it will be better when they start making good games for it.

I was comparing the sales of the DS to the PSP. the PS2 is just there to show how non-spectacular the PSP is doing by your same reasoning. the PSP is selling worse than the PS2.

Dude... this is a little unfair of projecting which system the public wants.

First off the PSP simply isn't selling because its 250 bucks, thats way way WAY too much for any kind of handheld system, once Sony snaps out of it and brings down the price to something competive then we'll start seeing a more even field of sales.

Secondly I'm not trashing on the DS, I would love to have one if I had the money for it, same thing with the PSP. I'm just saying using current sales charts to say "OMG DS IS TOTALLY KICKING PSP'S ASS DS IS THE GREATEST THING OF ALL TIME!" is a little off considering PSP's bad selling point.

              I dont recall saying that.

the point is, the DS is still on top. price isnt a factor. in japan, the DS and PSP prices are almost exactly the same. 150 vs. 180 so its NOT that big of a difference.

in the US, i'm sure price is a factor, but you know what? thats counts. sony is pushing people away from their system and towards the DS.

I dont even like the DS. I dont like the PSP. I'm not showing favorites, I just felt like pointing this out because of all the PSP fanboys screaming about PSP domination and such.

You're right, to that end, PSP doesn't have any games that interest me either, but the PSP isn't selling well because of its price. The price of the PSP and the age of the PS2 are the only reasons DS is selling more.

I don't really predict much of a future with Nintendo DS. For all I know, it could take off, some great games could be released, but if it keeps going the way it is now, it will go the way of Virtual Boy.

But the PSP can't succeed as a combo movie/music/videogame player.

It could seriously use a hard drive for that extra stuff. And, consequently, an even more outrageous price.

The PSP definitely won't succeed as a movie player. I have at least 30 DVD's, having to re-purchase them in PSP format would be silly. Also, I highly doubt Hollywood will make all new releases for PSP in addition to DVD. Finally, I don't see how a whole movie can fit on a UMD. (Probably uses multiple UMD's which would just be annoying).

the PSPs price is not a factor in the japanese market. it's only 30 dollars more expensive.

I mean the whole "iPod killer" angle is ludicrous. LUDAKRIS I tell ya!

After Sony performs that miracle they can go up to Heaven and punch out God.

When I read that part Valk, I did think you were playing favorites a little, but I'm simply stating one major point that I felt like mentioning.

Besides I also think a major reason the DS is selling is because people love the Game Boy and thus looked at the DS and thought "Hey Game Boy with two screens! Sweet!"

No offense Valk, just stating what I thought would be important to say for this conversation.

No. They only use one UMD. Remember that the video only has to look good on the PSP's screen which is way smaller than most people's TVs. They just downgrade the video.
