uh...uninstall? Its not that difficult to completely remove all remnants of Norton.
Are you sure? I think I remember it being hard to uninstall for some people, though I've never used it. I got AVG at the moment, since it's also free with no registration.
I'm not really looking to get rid of it. I got it for twenty bucks at Fry's so it's here for a year. I was merely commenting on how it sucks the life out of my computer. The thing just freezes when it runs a scan.

Well really most virus scans will slow down your computer somewhat on a scan, unless you have a really good Hard drive and hard drive controller. Since most read the whole file as they scan this really slows down performance as your hard drive has to start continuously reading from two different places, so you start getting some major seek time penalties. So as long as your not doing IO intensive work it should be good, but unfortunately a lot of things are.
Of course some Virus scans are better than others in system usage, but when doing a full system scan you're going to get some slow down. Unless of course your just talking about the resident scan (not a scheduled full scan), then probably time to shop for a better AV client.
i hate norton so bad. it prevents virus because you cant even do anything with it installed. your better to save yourself some money and turn your computer off because thats pretty much what norton forces you to do. i ended up fraging my hard drive to get rid of it. if they turned norton into a solider and sent it into iraq they would have those rebels beaten in no time.
why the hell make a program that eats your computer whole? so many good virus protectors out there that dont prevent you from operating your computer.
edit: as for getting ride of norton id say a massive sludge hammer to the hard drive worked for me. norton was off the hard drive when i was finished as where everything else used to make them.
It's just that mine pops up randomly and starts scanning while I'm in the middle of stuff. There does seem to be a general slowdown since I installed it.

yea, it auto scans when you start your computer which results in very slow start times, it starts when your doing something it feels is "risky" (such as trying to operate the computer), and it operates at scheduled times (which is pretty much whenever you decide to do something important). this software was designed to maximize your frustration and double the amount of time youd need with your therapist.
Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!
