did you upload an avatar and make sure you saved the changes made to your profile?
if you can't get it to work, post the URLs to the images you want to use (tell which one is which) and I'll set it for you.

I made an avatar on microsoft paint, typed in the file name, and clicked on the image when a window popped up. Does microsoft paint even work?Comment

As long as you're using a valid image file, jpg, gif, png it should be ok.
I bet you're trying to use a image that's too large.Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 150 pixels or 58.6 KB (whichever is smaller).The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

Right click -> Properties.

Well check it's actual file size to make sure that that's actually your problem.
To change the file type open it in MS Paint and go to File then Save As and underneath the box that you use to type in the file name there will be a box labeled file type. Click on the drop down menu and pick jpg or gif.
A better way is do the same thing in photoshop or other image editing software.The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.
