This is the start of the design pack I would like to make for a western themed RPG. Much like the celebrated Wild Arms games the world of WF will take you to the harsh dessert, hidden green meadows, underworld ruins and even to the sky to help save your world from the dark past that haunts it.

Is it a Western RPG??
'Cause Wild Arms hasn't been pulling its weight in that department.

yeh it is. totally inspired of course by it. But are you being funny about that comment? I LOVEEEEEE the WA series and cant wait till the 5th comes out the end of the month! YUS!
Eh, they jumped the shark when they gave that one guy a fish face in 3.
Looks good but I'd actually like to see some design stuff. I'm still waiting for you to do anything with that water themed one with the floating islands and the quad-winged dragon you posted years ago.

The logo's not bad for a start. The best thing about it is the WESTERN font, bar none. RANCH.
And I agree, that topic got closed before I could say something but I thought it was okay for a start. Who didn't emulate Akira Toriyama (or Tetsuya Nomura) at first? (Besides Loki, Nix, Marc and Sejon :P) I spent many a lunch period tracing his beautiful art in the Nintendo Power Chrono Trigger Player's Guide, and I still go back to some of his characteristics time to time, especially his angry knitted eyebrow eyes.
Grrrr.

Sorry to make a topic about this BUTTTTTTT, I was following that thread and to be honest, Vandel's art while yes having allot of common themes that we see in main stream manga/anime was drawn quite well. very few problems with proportions, some nice details in the clothing, and a very well drawn left hand holding the sword.
Keep drawing Val and DO NOT change your style! improve and tweak it but don't change it. would you rather be freaking drawing some crap like you see on the WB....I suspect not.
and because it's in the img forum here is a little sig I made for the western themed game I would like to design someday.

O_O
I just shat myself. I'd never expect to get this kind of comment...
Thanks man. It really means a lot to me :D I'm never gonna stop drawing, cuz' that's really the only thing I have going for me right now.
Again, thanks bro!! :D

A sig, that's it? Come on, at least a character design or two. I love westerns, games and anime hardly touch it. It's a shame really, lots of potential there.
Hey I drew Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII characters when I was in hich school.
Like a DORK.
Ninja Turtles in elementary. Beat that dudes.

Final Fantasy VII in elementary! :p
I like the logo man but I'm not a fan of the font used for Fates, I dunno it seems kinda stupid placed in front of the western one.
Dude you totally don't get it. It's like a fence. The wayward part is the boards and the fates part is the metal that holds it together. It's THEMATICAL.

Just a bit too clashing for my tastes.
BIOHUNTERZ
08-12-2007, 03:01 PM
Acutally the westward part is the only part I like of the logo, the fates is just something I threw in there. I am keeping the position of it but changing that font and look completly. as for chars it is taking me A LONG time to start working on stuff. as some have pointed out I tend to start and stop projects allot. Its something I dont like about myself artisticly but it is happening more often as I am getting older. hard to keep focused :(
What about doing Fates in a font that looks like it ws branded?

I think I will do that, I like it!

Why must every game character have blue hair.
Not judging you, I'm just sick of blue hair.

Now you just need the treasure hunter and the apprentice magician. :p

Don't forget about the cyborg demon hunter! :p
Though, I probably shouldn't be making jokes.... Bio's guy looks good enough to kick my ass.

whats funny is that i did not even look at vandal's thread before i even started drawing my chars for WF.
Then why do both your characters wield their weapons WITH PINKIES OUT?!?

Something I don't quite understand, why was everyone saying Vandal's work was the same old tired cliché and nobody said anything about this? Obviously Bio's work is a lot more refined and visually pleasing than Vandals, but except for a few subtle nuances they both look very much a like. Why is it that the same people who were calling Vandal's work generic have nothing to say about this?

Bio is a sacred talisman of this message board. Only Rena has bad things to say about him.
I mostly like Bio's work because of his interesting sense of color. Besides that it only grabs me when it has quirky flying tortoise blimps.

What most people don't realize that its ALL been done before.
Besides I completely admit my work looks like japanese styled work, because its SUPPOSE TO. I am not going to say it's fresh ground breaking material when it is not. PLUS I even stated that its enspired by wildarms which means that it's going to lend to the western theme.
It's my best and most enjoyed style to work in. I can't say I am sorry for that.

NO WAY MAN! BIO DOESN'T PUT POINTY CHINS ON EVERYONE!

Oh, and the outlines and coloring aren't as generic looking. Add to that the fact that we've seen different drawings by Bio NOT in this style and we've got a respect-fest.

dont worry there is more art comming with even more typical anime themed goodness to tear apart and maybe even a flying turtle soon.

Don't apologize, I wasn't trying to put you down for using that style, I wasn't one of the people putting Vandal down for it either. I just think people were being really biased toward Vandals art I think you yourself even pointed out that people were being biased toward him before you edited your first post.

Why's the burly black (almost black?) guy gotta have neon yellow pants? That's so anti-western.
Also, the middle person (can't really tell if it's guy/girl) has a nifty shamrock on his/her belt that I only now noticed. That rocks.

I think the key thing is that Bio's style isn't generic. I don't even know if I would call it anime-inspired. Videogame-inspired is more like it. Plus his lining and shading are thicker and blockier. While I'm certain you could find something that's very similar to his work I think it's clear that he's made his own style. It's more evident in some of his other works.
Vandal's style, on the other hand looks like it could come straight out of how to draw manga book. As many people have said there's nothing wrong with that. But he hasn't done anything to distinguish his art like Bio has. His Leon guy has cat ears and a dog tail, large anime eyes, and non-nose. It's all textbook stuff and he hasn't done anything really to distinguish it other than basic design choices such as hair style, spikes to the left vs spikes to the right or clothing. Now maybe to someone who's actually been taught about things like composition and design might be able to look at it and say oh it's different because of this this and this but to me I just see generic anime because it has those trademarks of traditional anime.
And the key thing I think that Vandal should keep in mind when reading all this discussion about his art is that nobody is saying that his art is bad. Which he hasn't done.

I think my favorite is the second guy with the big gun.
They're all pretty impressive, but I gotta admit I'm not a big fan of huge swords and extreme asymmetry.
BIOHUNTERZ

I know these do look like finished works but they are likely to change as i develop things further. the second and forth are female chars also. hehe. I am going to go back and give emma (the second) a more girlie color palette.
oh yeh, shade IS an android/robot.
emma has been color edited. check OG post (first page)
Everytime I try to brainstorm a Western themed idea it always ends up just being Trigun.
Chuck

I could tell the second one was a girl. She has boobs and everything. Not Gloomy sized maguppies but enough that you could tell.
I like them all but the third ones my fave. Without a nose he kinda reminds me of a ninja turtle.

There is nothing Western about those last two characters.
What's not western about an female zombie robot from the future? Gosh Mora you sure can be sexist sometimes.

silly mora, prehaps she is not directly related to the world the game is based on. hmmmm

I wanted to make a western survival-horror before, but of course I also wanted to make my psychological survival-horror, Sin. I also wanted to learn game design, get decent gaming software, and make Sin the masterpeice I saw it as. Of course, none of these happened. :(
Anyways, some really bad ass stuff, Bio. I would absolutely love to play this game... just from the characters alone.

Ugh. Ugh UGH.
Emma with pink is so bad. GUH. Just so wrong. She didn't need a girly palette so much as just a more feminine appearance. I saw only a manly face and what might have been a suggestion of a feminine body. Now I see her and I think GRRL POWA WAI COOL. Pink just makes me think that.
But then, I liked X3.
I just think it clashes horribly with everything else.
BIOHUNTERZ
08-14-2007, 11:59 AM
Fixed, btw she is going to be the tom boy type so I dont want her looking to fem. besides LOOK AT TEH GUN! You two are right pink was a bit much. After sleeping on it I looked at it and said "ewwww".
Chuck
08-16-2007, 10:01 AM
Zeer's look is kinda formulaic but that doesn't stop him from looking cool.
I still think the girls pink is too clashing. It's just a horrible color scheme choice.

well looks like I will be going through a style change for the game. while I like the look of it hand drawing the chars in the style I started with is proving to be far to time instensive for my needs of mass producing the chars, monsters, npc's, etc. I am glad I caught this early.
btw...xenogears soundtrack....still one of the best eva!!!!!!
