    Dragon Warrior IV (NES)

Kinda fun for a Dragon Warrior game/RPG on the NES. Looks great too. Or at least the environments. A few neat things going on. For NES I mean. Funny thing is, some of the things I see happening in this game aren't possible on RPG Maker. Kinda disappointing that there doesn't seem to be any boss theme so far, though the different overworld themes is a nice touch. I haven't found any music that's real annoying yet. And the sound effects seem softer than in the GBC editions, which is nice. It's nice that the AI for my NPC party members is decent. That first one doesn't seem to let my HP go too low before healing at all (also neat how townspeople reacted if I put that member up in front). I really wish the bag feature had been implimented at this point. It probably isn't as big a problem with multiple party members, but during the first chapter, I constantly found myself running out of inventory room, what with only having one party member the whole time that could hold items.

I'm constantly worried, though. My NES is in less-than-poor condition. Due to DW4's strictness about holding in the reset button while turning it off in order to keep the saves, I lost some saves the first couple times I turned it on because the darn thing didn't want to boot up properly (ranging from doing nothing to constant resetting to glitched graphics). Doesn't matter about the first time, as the saves deleted belonged to the previous owner. The second time, I had put in an hour or two of work. I think I remedied the problem by sticking my Final Fantasy game pak a little over the DW4 pak inside my NES, but if that thing starts messing up and my file gets erased (made it to Chapter 2), I'm going to freak. I'll probably wind up trying to find a top-loader, since as I understand it those things don't have nearly as much trouble as the front-loaders. Not to mention the top-loaders generally don't have what appears to be spagetti sauce between the door and the connection.

I wonder if using a Game Genie would help. Not to put in codes or anyting, but because the game wouldn't technically start until I finish putting in codes (or lack of) and thus it couldn't complain about the constant resetting or powering up/down that I have to go through if the game doesn't want to boot up.

nevermind, apparently real NES systems that were top loaders, are expensive, and the only thing i see that is cheap are what look like imported versions that are probably crap, and not made by nintendo it seems.

      oh well, nevermind

Just try to find a newer NES. It doesn't have to be a top-loader.

If you buy one from a game shop, make sure you can return it in case it doesn't work.

And my cat peed on my old NES in a foolish attempt to "claim" it. Nice try, Todd!

Loved DW4. And no, there's no boss music other than the final boss music.

You're gonna be disappointed when you hit Chapter 5... You're not going to be able to control any of the other characters except the hero. You have to use 'tactics'.

              Re: Dragon Warrior IV (NES)

As a Dragon Quest fan, I of course have some comments to make.

First, Dragon Warrior IV was great, I agree. However, it was the start of the Tenkuu Trilogy, but the other two chapters of this trilogy were never localized, so playing through DW4 is like reading the first chapter of a novel and then stopping.

Second, I like DW3 the most out of the NES games. The premise was unrivaled for an NES game. It was a prequel to DW1 (and also the last part of the Erdrick/Loto trilogy) and the cool thing was that the ending of DW3 lead right into the beginning of DW1. You know that Erdrick guy everyone goes on about in DW1? In DW3, you ARE Erdrick. How cool was that?

Finally, about DWVIII, I agree that it looks amazing, and probably is amazing. In fact, the ONLY thing that isn't great about DWVIII is its completely horribly tottally extremely crappy world map. It's a double edged sword, the developers made the game look amazing, but didn't spend any time on the world map. (For those that don't know, it has BOF4's map style). Other than that, WOW what a game. Sadly, there has been no official word that it will be localized. Don't get your hopes up. We missed out on at LEAST two Dragon Warrior releases since DW7 that were held back from us, meaning Enix stiffed us out of at least four or five Dragon Warrior games, and they will probably do it again. It could happen, getting localized and everything, but I'm not holding my breath.

Riotsword: I'm pretty sure you can choose commands for everyone in DW4, it's just in a really wierd place, but it's there.

Could've sworn it was getting a release this fall.

Edit: According to this, it'll be released October 1st.

The release date may be premature, but according to this, it's definitely coming over.

As much as I love RPGamer, it's not official until I hear it from Square/Enix's mouths. I am not hopeful for a repeat of what happened with DW6, when it was said by all the reporters that it was going to be released and it never happened.

Of course I clicked the link. "Is gonna announce it" doesn't work for me. I'm keeping patient. I'm not saying that it isn't coming out, I'm just holding off judgement until it becomes official. If you were a Dragon Warrior fan around the time DW5+6 was released, you'd understand.

Well, I don't know what the deal was, but it's apparently working fine now. Maybe it was just having trouble playing it because it had been a while since it's last user played it. A week before getting it, I was playing FFI, and that booted up just fine.
You're gonna be disappointed when you hit Chapter 5... You're not going to be able to control any of the other characters except the hero. You have to use 'tactics'.
Yeah, I read about that. I didn't like the option in Dragon Warrior VII, so I probably won't like it here. At least in DW7 I was able to choose to control the other party members.
However, it was the start of the Tenkuu Trilogy, but the other two chapters of this trilogy were never localized, so playing through DW4 is like reading the first chapter of a novel and then stopping.
Yeah, I read how every three games in the main series (it seems) revolves around certain characters/worlds. Isn't 4-6 also called the Heaven trilogy? Anyway, real sucky that we never go the SNES versions of 5 and 6 (Enix went bankrupt because they had a town name that was the same name as something in Star Wars and Lucas sued them, right?). Even suckier that it seems we won't be getting the PS2 remake. Which is why I'm going to study Japanese and import those two. Maybe.

I have that for GBC. Haven't finished that one, though. Actually, the only Dragon Warrior game I've ever beaten (out of the 5 or 6 I've played) was the first one, also the GBC version, which also introduced me to the series.

And I've heard that DW8 was coming here, from several sources, like GameSpot, PSM, and RPGamer. It will definately surprise me if it didn't come here.
