New Wii firmware released

Not a VC game but I guess this is as good a place as any to post about the Wii firmware v3 update.

Wii Menu
The weather forecast will now be displayed on the Forecast Channel icon in the Wii Menu.
Headline news will now be displayed on the News Channel icon in the Wii Menu.
The current time will now be displayed in the Wii Menu.
The area around the Wii Message Board button will now flash when a message arrives..

Wii Message Board
You're now able to rearrange the order of your Wii Friends in the address book.
You're now able to go into the Wii Friends registration screen by pressing the A Button on a blank spot in the address book.
Envelope message icons will now appear on the calendar only on the dates when a message is received.
Your message sending history will now be displayed in Today's Accomplishments.
You can now scroll the message text by pressing the B button on the message screen.

Wii Shop Channel
The search function on Virtual Console has been enhanced.

Argh, you beat me to it! And you don't have a Wii yet! (I kid.)

I already downloaded the update. I would not have known about it right away had it not been for the fact that I still have it on WiiConnect24 and that my Wii was glowing blue when I woke up this morning.

If you use a Freeloader to play imported Wii/GC games for the love of mike don't download this update. Wii update breaking Freeloaders

Lets you play imported games on your console.

I'm guessing the reason they did this is to stop pirating though.

USB keyboard support added, except for the internet channel. because that would obviously be far too useful. oh, wait. no one uses the internet channel. because we have computers that do it better.

How do you access the update?

if you didnt get a message from nintendo, the easiest way is to just go to the settings menu and do a connection test. after connecting, it will immediately ask if you want to do a system update.

There's also a spot in the options menu for system updates.

Great way to discourage import games for the Wii, eh?

Even though it's perfectly all right to play imported games on the portable systems, and they even SELL import games in local retailers.

I use the Internet Channel, because I can't watch Youtube videos on my TV.

I didn't even realize you could yank posts out of a topic to make a new thread. That's cool. Would've made it a seperate thread to begin with but I didn't think there'd be even this much discussion of it.

Good to see it'll finally get keyboard support for the browser. Opera said from the beginning the only reason they didn't add it is they were waiting for Nintendo's go ahead.

Look, another product I didn't know about that the update kills. SD Media Launcher for GameCube/Wii for homebrew. Nintendo really is cracking down.
