    Breath of Fire, the series

These games have the tendancy to be awesome. But at times make you wanna cry. Here's my evaualtion on the series.

    Ryu

Typically the silent protagonist (sp?) and can turn into dragon form. I've only payed BoF 1-3 and Dragon Quarter. But I like the Ryu from BoF III the most, and Dragon Quarters' second.

    Nina

The girl with wings. A magic user, and plays some vital role to the story. My favorite Nina is the one in Dragon Quarter. Her and Ryus relationship are really interesting.

Breath of Fire I & II

Only played myabe 40 min of both. Pretty boring, but I liked II more and the music as well. Might get it for GBA...

    Breath of Fire III

Great game with great music... too bad it all goes downhill once you cross the ocean. *sigh*

    Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter

Fun game, more of a dungeon-crawler really. Good battle system though, but it tends to turn into a slugfest towards the end and the fights drag on. Dragon form is cool... but well, you can either choose to end the battle immediatly and raise you D-Counter, or waste an hour. Some battles do require you to D-Dive though.

If it reached 100%, you have to start all over, and there's the SOL system. It's a different game, but still fun. And the story is pretty rockin'.

Ah, now I see. But it's kind of hidden in his Ryu description. Can you blame me?

Re: Breath of Fire, the series

I've only played BoF I, II, and Dragon Quarter. Haven't beaten any of them yet. BoF I, I made it as far as the ocean underworld. It was okay, but I didn't like it a whole lot. The extremely high encounter rate played a part in killing my insterest. I did like how healing spells and items always went first, though.

BoF II, I like more. The translation is pretty horrible, but at least you can still tell what's going on for the most part. Plus I kinda like the characters in this game better than in the first one. I stopped playing after I got the "ship". When games open up half the world or more all at once, I tend to lose interest quickly if I don't know exactly where to go next.

BoF: DQ, I made it through the first dungeon and stopped playing. Not because I didn't like it, but because I was distracted by the three or four other games I wound up getting at the same time. Haven't started playing it again for a while.

BTW, I should mention I only played the GBA editions of BoF I and II. I understand the music was butchered in BoF I, and the encounter ratio was lowered for BoF II.

Ahh yeah, BoF IV Ryu is exactly the same.

BoF III ranks among my favorite RPGs for Playstation.

i like the bof series, my favorit is bof3, followed by 4 and dq.

capcom has produced a solid series all around with some interesting ideas and innovations - the world map of 3, the sushi quest from 3, the split storyline of 4, welk and the plains in 4, the innovations of dq, and so damn much more!

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!
Card Three is released! You can find it here!

It NEEDED to be lowered. How frustrating was it to try to make your way through the dungeons with your precious HP and AP intact, only to get in a battle every 4 steps?

Me too. That was one of my favorite parts. That and finally getting grown-up Ryu.

BoF IV is the best one in my eyes... the graphics, music and story all came together in the best way. It also had the least script problems. (Reading the scripts of 2 and 3 is an exercise in patience and sanity.)

Yeah, my descriptions are flawed. I wrote them in 5 minutes. If anyone like JLaCroix wants to debate over the complexities of Ryu and Nina, and their realionships go ahead.

I also love the music in BoFIII. Anyone saying anything else is a blasphemer.
