Ohhhh, honestly, this may be a bad move on MS's part.
It will splinter their user base more than the PS2 HDD did, because people are going to buy a game, not realizing that they need the HDD, and lots of people have the core system, not the premium or elite.
Sony learned their lesson on splintering their user base, doesnt look like MS has.
I don't think one game (in the US at least) that requires a hard drive counts as "splintering" the PS2. Also that game came with the HDD in the first place.
The Core pack should have never been introduced. Especially considering the limited disk space available since they rushed the system and had to use DVDs.
Agreed. There's such a tiny percentage of 360 owners without hard drives that it won't be much of an issue. And if they discontinue the Core or more retailers follow Best Buy's lead and stop ordering them, and they brought down the price of the hdds (seriously! $100 for 20gb?) that'd shrink that percentage even more. Either way removing that restriction from developers is worth the small splintering.
I wonder if this is in response to that whole PGR thing. Where they supposedly had to take out day/night cycles because they couldn't fit both sets of textures on the DVD.

This is a smart move. With the PS3 having hds on all of its models and larger ones at that the 360 needs this. Rockstar was just saying how they were having difficulties with the 360 version of GTA4 because of the lack of hd.
Whether you know people who own them or not, there are people who own the core model and no hard drive. the core system has been available since the system's launch, and the hard drives are not widely available for seperate purchase aside from specialty game stores and toys r us.
Jeroak is right, this is going to splinter the userbase. well, I'd actually change that to "driving an axe into it". just because most 360 users have a hard drive doesnt make it okay to do this. there are going to be a lot of people buying games that suddenly will not play on their systems.
With this announcement, I'm sure the core system is going to be phased out (it'd be cruel to keep it out), and the 20gb hard drive for seperate purchase along with it (since the only people who would need it would be those who buy a sku no longer offered), forcing the users who went for the cheaper system to buy the more expensive 120gb hard drive or just play old games.
It was a huge mistake for microsoft to ever offer the 360 without a hard drive. now a good chunk of their users are going to pay for their mistake.
My original incentive in buying a core system was saving a little money when I decided on a 360, but I realized I had to buy the other stuff separately at some point. Seeing how eager I was to get into XBox Live Arcade, I knew a HDD was necessary. So I blew more money on the Premium.
It'd have been nice if they offered the Premium set at the same price as they did the Core.
I think Microsoft saw this as a necessary evil. Enough developers have now had PS3s to play with that there was a lot of grumbling about how preferable it was to have a hard drive around. In order to keep games from becoming PS3 exclusives, they had to offer the option of making HD mandatory games.
Also, I've seen HDs at Best Buy before, so I'm not sure they're as rare as some may think.
Sucks for those without a hard drive, but it's good news for me.
Some games right now store temporary data to the HD, but not all of them are 100%. I had some DREs for thisgame, but I guess Oblivion is one of the games that gets a DRE a lot for most people. I'm guessing if new games are designed specifically for the HD, then we should be seeing less of the DRE problems.
