    Bridge Collapse

So, anyone who knows Minneapolis, the 35-W bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed today.

For those of you who don't... A huge bridge feel into the river today, suddenly collapsed. 150 cars into the drink, 3 dead so far. Then it starts raining heavily, and it all gets worse.

It was being worked on to be more stable, but I guess they didn't do it fast enough.

I bet people saw the Mothman before it happened.

      Re: Bridge Collapse

It seems as if the slow moving traffic and associated vibrations with it and the vibrations from the construction work provided a resonant frequency with sufficient amplitude to cause the system to enter an unstable operating region. Thus, components of the structure tore themselves apart and the bridge collapsed.

This is an example of very, very bad misfortune. It is near impossible to reach such a frequency with enough strength to collapse the bridges developed and built within the past 50 years.

Just my conjecture. It may be completely wrong.

I'm on I-35 almost every day. It's the main North/South route through Oklahoma City.

they said the bridge was structurally unsound. scored 50 out of 100 on a recent evaluation. there was no avoiding it, that thing was gonna come down.

My parents were actually on that bridge earlier that same day :-(

It's crazy. Two buses with students crashed too. It was on the front page of our local paper today too. Sad

The news channels won't shut up about this. As if it's the next GD great American tragedy or something.

                      Re: Bridge Collapse

We could argue the severity of it a million times, but fact is only 7 have been found dead so far with 60 injured. It was 40 years old and in need of repair.

People dying sucks, and I'm not about to say that it's not a tragic accident.

But what about the crisis in African countries, where women and children are raped daily by gun-toting militia? Or the still-recovering India after that massive tsunami?

It's not news anymore, so people don't care and forget about it. Meanwhile this bridge/celebrity/politician/American stuff is the center of attention. And that's why I'm not interested.

                        Re: Bridge Collapse

The way our country treats other countries is almost similar to that of 9-11. Everyone was up in arms and ****** for the first few months, then nobody even cared anymore and everyone starts hating each other again. Human life is beginning to have less value in our society, which is becoming disgusting. Although, I do think we shouldn't grieve about stuff very long. Grieving doesn't do anything, and the media certainly doesn't help.

Being someone who lives by the bridge, I'm kinda ****ed at how big this is getting. It was shocking when it happened, yeah, but there are so many more important issues. I agree with Den.
