My PS2 is dying.

    My PS2 is dying.

    It's starting to make horrible noises when reading discs and lagging up my games horribly. I was just playing Tales of the Abyss and it was freezing on me continually. This is the second PS2 I've had, and they are both dieing from the same issue.

    Currently I'm installing ToA and a few other games I play regularly onto my HDD, stalling the PS2's demise.

    I think if this one dies on me, I have no choice but to look into getting a PS3, I've been holding off because of the price tag and lack of good games, but the game base is growing and with my PS2 on it's deathbed I think it may be time to take action.

    For those of you have have a PS3, how is it's disc reading? As bad as the PS2? Or better?

        My first, with at least three years on it. It's been moved from house to house, usually left on carpet (though I try not to do that anymore), and I've actually had it outside this summer (put it in until this damn heat wave is gone, though.) Nothing more than disk read errors here.

          call sony tech support they will fix disc read errors for free because of a class action lawsuit yawn

            You can get one of those slim PS2s. Better get, try and find a Silver one. I'm sure they will last a lot longer with fewer, if any, problems. You might hear some buzzing noises sometimes when a disc is being read, but that's completely normal.

              Mine is inching closer to death. I've had mine since 2000 or 2001 and it started messing up this summer. The disc tray now has a mind of it's own and sometimes closes while I'm trying to take a disc out. On time, it almost grabbed my Guitar Hero. Luckily I saved it before that could happen.

                I'd get a slim line PS2, but I have FFXI on my PS2, and I need a hard drive for it.

                I just finished installing most of my games to the hard drive, but it's just about reached it's max capacity. I'm down to 4 GB left, but it's just a PS2 HDD, so it's not like I need the room.

                  Ah, all right .... I had no idea you were playing FFXI with the PS2 Hard Drive.

                  I had one of those myself, but after quitting FFXI, I got rid of it right after my old PS2 kicked the can. I ended up getting a slim one and it's worked well for me thus far.
