View Full Version : Pavilion music compilation-Deadline for requests extended.

Here's a project I've been thinking of doing for the better part of this week. Obright and I talked about doing something like this a few months ago, so I'm making a post to do it now.
I want to compile a song or songs from anyone here at the Pav that makes their own music and make a Pav compilation. How I want to do this is as follows:
I'm gonna make a poll as to if people would rather have an MP3 disc made, in which case I can accept 10 artists and 60 MB of material from each; or would they rather have an audio CD, in which case I will accept 10 artists with a maximum of 7 and a half minutes of music allotted to them. This would mean that if you want to submit a seven and a half minute song, that would be okay, or if you want to submit a four minute song and a three and a half minute song, or any combination thereof, that would be fine too.
When the poll closes (I'll make it a two week poll), artists will be able to submit their works, depending on how the vote goes.
When the CDs are made, each of the ten artists will be sent a full-color disc (my buddy Eric just bought a printer that prints images directly onto a CD, and offered to make some for me). Once the CDs are compiled, I will make a post in this thread offering to make twenty more for regular Pavilion members. Anyone can request one, but I will put a time limit on the requests, and if more than 20 people want one, I will draw randomly as to who gets one. The first five people whose names I draw will get a Lightscribed version of the CD, and the other 15 will get theirs on a regular blank CD-R.
Watch this thread for further details. I will not be taking artists requesting to be on the CD until after the poll closes. If more than 10 artists want to submit material, I'll once again do a random drawing to see who gets put on the CD (as I am hosting this project, my material is guaranteed to be put on it).
Questions? Comments? Please post. And to all Pavvies (artist or otherwise) who are interested in this, please feel free to vote.
I plan on investing a tidy sum in this, but this is one way to show my love to the Pav. Plus, my contest thread is going nowhere (*sigh*), and I'm now making good enough money to be able to afford to do this.
*prays that this thread doesn't die a quick death*
Oh, and someone, please contact Pandable to see if he's interested in this.

Considering my CD burner is kaput, and I'm on a dialup connection, I voted MP3.
Also, do you need some sleeve art?
Oh, and Pandable's HD exploded. I haven't seen him on YIM in about a month or more. I sent him a message, but I don't even know if he got it.

I haven't figured out all the details yet, but if you want to send a folder which contains the album art, feel free to do so. It's also possible by customizing the folder so when you view the folder itself, the album art shows up.
Also, I'm just curious....who stickied this? A heartfelt thanks to whoever did.

Can I call shotgun cd? Because I totally want one. Make sure B-Wire gets involved!

Whoa! This is a really cool idea.
While I love messing around with my Funkmaster Flex's Digital Hitz Factory PS2 game, I don't really have any music I would consider worthy to be on a CD like this.
Just out of curiosity what's the difference between a lightscribed CD and a regular blank CD-R one?
Perversion
07-22-2007, 11:12 PM
Lightscribe is a special laser that etches a monochrome image onto the CD itself....I'm planning on making (or having one of the artists make) an image to use for the CD, and print the artist ones in full color, and the five lightscribed ones have the same image in monochrome.

Well, MP3 would be more environmentally friendly, but with a CD, one could download to an iPod and listen to it on the CD player. I'm torn.

Umm...they're both going to be on a CD, so neither is more or less environmentally friendly than the other.
This is a great idea.
I voted for audio CD because it evenly samples music from everyone, though albeit short.

If we don't get a CD, could we send a bit of money over to get one?

I had thought about asking for a few bucks from everyone who wins one to recoup some of my losses, but I think I can swing $70-$100 to make these and send them all out...
To answer your question directly, though, I only really want to make 20 non-artist CDs, even if I was to get paid for the possibility of making more. I kind of want there to be an "exclusive" nature in terms of winning one, and thus don't want to make them semi-readily available.
My two suggestions to you:
1)You, Hito, and [SKYE] should all request one when the time comes, thus upping your chances of one of you receiving one.
2)If none of you win one, you can always contact someone that has won one, and see if they can transfer the songs to you over AIM or a PTP network.
but I think I can swing $70-$100

If I had my recording equipment I would definitely submit something. What kind of deadline are you looking for? I'm still very interesting in everyone else’s music though.
I'll try and contact my friend Aaron, Geno, he doesn't post here all that often, I'm sure he would contribute to the project.

I make a lot of music. I could submit something but I don't really want a copy of the CD.

Is that a mag emote I'm not aware of?
Okay... What's the difference, then?
:\
One is gonna be on MP3s, so more songs (upper limit 700 MB worth)will fit on it, but it will only be able to be played in a computer or a DVD player, and the other is an audio CD, which will play on any standard CD player, but will be limited to 80 minutes.
What kind of deadline are you looking for?
I wish I hadn't made the poll for two weeks....it's kinda clear right now which format is gonna win out, and I'm kinda anxious to get this thing underway.
To answer your question, though, after the poll expires, I'll be accepting requests to be included on the CD. I'll probably give that a week or two so all interested artists have a chance to see the thread and respond. From that point on, I guess it depends on how quickly I can compile everyone's music. I'm thinking about using either Gmail to transfer stuff, or AIM/YM, which might be a bit better. Then again, if anyone's on Soulseek, I can always get your music that way, too. I'm hoping to have all the music compiled within a month/month and a half after selecting the artists, but that could change depending on extenuating circumstances.
So let's see, two weeks for the poll, two weeks for artist selection, a month or more for compiling....it looks like this thing is not even gonna be ready to be burned for the first time until at least two months from now. Burning might take a while, too, considering my friend has offered to put images on some of the CDs for me, and I only see him 2-3 times a month or so. Best guess is that these are all gonna be mailed around beginning/mid November. I really want to get it done sooner, but after thinking about the logistics behind this, it's probably gonna take about that long. It'll be a nice early X-mas present for those that win a copy of it.
That's all I can think of for now...if I think of more later, I'll post again. Thanks for asking, though....it allowed me to just now work this all out in my head.
EDIT:I've decided to use the standard 6 months or longer that you've been a member to even be considered for putting any material on the CD/winning a copy for the rest of the Pav. I know in my first post, I said everyone, but this will prevent some no-name from showing up and getting his songs on the CD, or winning one when there are people who deserve it more.

Also, do you need some sleeve art?
Oh, you mean sleeve art for the whole CD....I thought you meant sleeve art for any individual albums you decide to submit....
Well, I have an idea for the cover (if I can find it), but we'll see what happens. I WILL however, need an image for the CD itself, and I'll probably be taking submissions for that....
EDIT:Sorry for the double post.

You could email the mp3's to people who don't mind not getting the actual CD, that would eliminate the cost of making the CD's. I know I for one would have almost no use for the CD, I'd probably just put the music right onto my iPod. Then again, it would be cool to have the actual CD in case, but maybe that could be restricted to only the artists and/or the winners.

You could upload it to a private My Space page. I believe they allow more than 4 songs now. There's also an option so anyone can download songs off that page as well. Assuming you're not one of those tards that thinks My Space is worst thing on the internet, its definitely up there, but it has some great practical uses for bands and upcoming music.

Well, there's three days left, and it's pretty clear which format the CD will be. So you can still vote if you've not done so yet, but I'll begin today taking requests to be included on the CD. If you are a musician, and want your music to be included on this, post here. I will only take 10 (possibly 11, because I still need to include myself) artists on this thing. Once again, I'll put a two week limit for you to sign up. If there are more than ten people who want on, I'll do a random drawing. If I don't get all ten, well, that just means fewer CDs I have to make. So I'll give you until 8-16 to put your name into the hat. Details on submissions will follow after I have all artists. Good luck!

hey magik.
don't wait for me. i'll be awhile.
it's not so much that i'm not happy with any of my music, just that my old music is me going into something without any vision and coming out the other end with a jumbled mess. it's decent for where i was, but i'm better now so i don't really want to give the impression that my old music is music that i'm satisfied enough with to put it on display.

Sorry for the delay, people. I kind of mentioned it in another thread, but I guess I should post in this one, too.
Basically, I was kinda waiting to get all ten artists represented, or at least as close to ten as possible. Right now, if you want, I can begin taking submissions from those who have already confirmed in order to begin getting a folder ready. In all honesty, though, before I finalize anything, I kinda want to see how things turn out with Highwind, who apparently is travelling cross-country, and might not have access to the internet for a while; I was also waiting to see the status of Really Awesome's current project(s), and was most definitely holding out for a bit for word from Pandable, as no Pavilion CD comp would be complete without at least one song from him. So, yeah, if you're interested in sending me stuff, or giving me links to stuff I can put on the CD, by all means, post here or PM me....other than that, until I hear final confirmation from the three aforementioned individuals, I'm holding off on calling the CD "complete."

I don't need to bump this, as it's stickied, but I thought I would post something new instead of editing. Long story short, this obviously went nowhere. I thought about asking Valk to unsticky this a number of times, but now I might get something done on this project.
When I initially made the thread, I was in a "management" position at my job, and was soon to be faced with the dreaded holiday season (I work retail). Thus, all motivation I once had to make games, review games for the Mag, and finish up this little project was exhausted due to not wanting to come home from an 8-16 hour day (average in Nov and Dec was probably 11-12 hours) and do more "work."
I've just recently moved into sales, and assuming the bottom does not completely drop out of the economy, I should be making more money and have WAY less stress, and thus have more motivation to do the more creative stuff mentioned above (you know, stuff I once enjoyed). So by March, once I get settled into my new position and have a week of vacation time I'm intending to take, you'll (hopefully) see some rapid progress on this endeavour. If April begins, and this is is still going nowhere, I'm gonna ask Valk to unsticky this, and chalk it up to another grandiose, ambitious idea destined for incompletion/failure (see my gaming forum for more evidence of this :()
I apologize to everyone for getting some hype behind this thing and then not following through. Hopefully that'll change in the near future (and hopefully my next RPGM game will follow suit).
I'm still doing music, Perv. Just let me know what you need, and what you're looking for.
...Wow, over 4 months, and nothing.
I'm withdrawing my bid to add music to the project until I know the project is back online.

Just PM me at the Mag or something when the project ends its idleness. As for me, I'm always working on new music, and I am currently working with an R and B artist from Australia. It's pretty nifty, and I'm shifting to a genre (R and B) that I haven't had much experience in.
