    Display off difficulties

First off, I just joined this forum about 5 minutes ago. I pretty much have all the basics down, but I can't do something as simple as display off. Anyway, I'm trying to have it so that you can't see a certain character in one building until you talk to another character in another building. For the event code, I have

    Display off
    Refresh Display

Now when I enter the building with the character that has that event code, I can still see him. I've been at this for a while, and it's getting a little frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S Why is it every time I type something like this it feels like I'm writing a letter?

First have an auto event display off that character. (Check to see if you have selected the right character. I have accidently selected the wrong character with the same name.)

And make sure you can't see that character to start with when you enter that area with the auto event. Cause there is a split second where you will see the character before the event activates the display off.

And you don't need a refresh display for characters. That is really only for dungeon, town, and field map condition changes.

      Re: Display off difficulties

For anything that is meant to be "displayed off" or "decorative displayed off" at the start of the game, you're gonna have to create an auto-event at the location where the player starts the game. This event should handle all of your "game setup" stuff and then display itself off so it doesn't get caught in a loop.

The same holds true for variables. If there's a variable that you want to set to a value other than zero at game start, use your "game setup" event to do that.

It's basically an event that handles one-time things that need to be set up when the game begins.

So... If I am understanding this correctly, having a display off in the character's event code doesn't work, instead I need a seperate auto-event?

          Yeap.

And make sure you display off of the auto event so it doesn't loop like Crythania said.

Ok, thanks. I can't believe I didn't think of something so simple. Thanks for responding.

the simple things are what you WANT to need help with so that when you get through something really tough people can look at it and say, "WOw, I would have never been able to get that!"

It might have been a simple process, but this is RPG Maker 3 we're talking about, simplicity flew out the window. Especially if you got used to the simplicity of the first two titles. Things you could do in only one step now take several, and I feel unnecessary, steps in the thrid game.

Strange, I have always heard that RPG maker 2 was more complicated than RPG maker 3.

He really has no idea what he is talking about. RPGM2 is by far more difficult and requires a lot more steps than RPGM3.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. When I say simplicity, I mean what is possible to do with the third game, which is close to nothing. RPG Maker 2 on the other hand, is kinda hard to figure out how to make it work, but once you figure it out you can do anything you want to with it. Again, that was my mistake.

The word you're looking for is "versatility".

RPG Maker 2 is extremely versatile (you can do a lot with it).
RPG Maker 3 is not as versatile (it has limitations).

"Simplicity" has a completely different meaning.

RPG Maker 2 is complicated (lots of options to choose from, hard to work with).
RPG Maker 3 is simplistic (not as many options to choose from, easy to work with).

Class dismissed! There may be a pop quiz tomorrow, so do your homework!

You can post it here....thanks for asking, though. Unlike some newbies who post 5 questions in five threads, you had the courtesy to ask first. Plus, it'll make the post count of the thread higher.
