None of that damn poetry ****.

I casted a projection of a photo I took onto the wall over this giant sheet of paper a friend gave me, sketched out the basic proportions and stuff then took it down to work on the details. After penciling, I inked out the line work, then washed over the thing in watercolor, finally fixing my mistakes and adding little details with acrylic. I had to wait for some watercolor to dry before fixing the right eye, it looks funny because there's no color in the iris.

And it's pretty big.

Criticize me.

But poetry is an art... regardless, that is a pretty good picture. I wish I could do anything decent with any type of paint. All I can do is charcoal based drawings, but I haven't done those in some time. Nice work, Smurtle. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about painting to give you any worth while critizism.

Bring on the artists!

Nicely done, Smurtle. Post more if you can.

Ok, ok. I really like the strokes for the hair. It actually looks like some hair.

Why is it that you did the line art for the knuckles on the right hand, but not the left hand? I guess it's just one hand looks more detailed than the other and the one that has the most action is the one that isn't detailed.

I can't really pull anything more out of my ass.

Oh **** I didn't even notice the hand thing. Now that you point that out, it's killing me. I'll fix it later. I fixed the eye earlier though, which was a major improvement.

It appears as if her hair is hiding right behind her necklace and as if there is no more necklace hanging on the back of her neck.

Do your friends ever come over and ask you if thats what you imagine you look like as a girl. BURN BURN BURN. It's nice though.

I figured I should contribute some crappy art since all I had was a mediocre joke to add to this thread so I spent a few minutes doing this:

Ok...well...since you ASKED...

Since you projected the image, proportions are not an issue...but shading is. The painting needs some shading to give it a bit more depth. For example, adding some shading to her hair will fix Terr's necklace problem.

Other than that, I think it looks great. The composition is fine, and the mood of the subject is captured in spite of it being subtle. No amount of projecting will do that for you...sometimes not even if you're projecting onto photographic paper can you get the mood to come across correctly! (Not to mention the composition.)

Oh, and you don't have to trace around each fingernail...IMO it calls too much attention to the bottom-left corner. Just a hint is enough.

I really like the way you captured the girl's expression. One wonders what she is thinking as she was playing. She looks like she's ready to say something, but holding back, or she might just be singing as she plays. Her eyes kind of grab you. I wonder if she knew you were taking the picture. It looks like a candid shot to me.

It could just be the angle of the picture, but the top right hand section of the guitar looks a little weird like it should be more rounded or something. Or, it could just be me. I'm no art critic for sure.

Definitely a nice job!! Cool! Thanks for sharing this with us Smurtle!

I see what you mean about the guitar, but I think her shirt is obscuring part of it...or that's how it comes across to me. Again, boosting the contrast a bit might help with that. There's already shading there, but a bit more might help.

It's not like anything's glaringly 'wrong' with the picture or anything. The contrast thing is just a personal aesthetic observation.

Is that Nixon hogging your chair AND air filter?

It's very nice.

My advice would be to lighten up on the line work on the folds of the clothing. The watercolor by itself does that just fine.

That doll on my chair is Mr. Abraham Lincoln. He doesn't have his hat, so he looks weird. Thanks for the input, everyone.
