    the UFC (mixed martial arts)

i dont know if theres any interest for this topic since most people here dont like sports at all not to mention violent ones, but i thought id make it anyway just for fun.

mixed martial arts (known to most as the UFC , ultimate fighting championship) is a combat sport where there are basically no rules except for obvious dirty stuff like groin kicks. basically two guys fighting until one gives up. it started as a test to see which martial art was really the best in a fight, and after all the crappy ones like kung fu were weeded out it became a cool time with a lot of depth

its a good time for mixed martial arts right now because the american UFC just bought PRIDE, the japanese equivalent of UFC. so now they have basically all the best fighters in the world centralized in one place, resulting in a lot of good fights. fans of the sport are generally excited about world champ fedor emelianenko (AKA the most dangerous man alive) coming over to the states to beat everyone

heres a short video of fedor getting slammed on his neck then winning the fight

so if anyone actually watches it or is aware of it or has an opinion or anything say it. also if you have a question you can ask me i know a bit about it

    anyways thats my topic

Why is it that all those stupid fights become wrestling? I mean where is the martial arts?

It seems like they just want to hug and hump the other guy.

Uh, most martial arts teach grappling techniques.

I for one think UFC kicks ass, I especially like watching the gimmicky guys with punked out dyed hairdos getting their asses kicked.

I like UFC but I would like it a whole lot more if they would stay up more often and box a bit longer rather than grappling.

I mean there is nothing wrong with that technique but I'd love to just see them go pound ofr pound like in boxing.

Yeah but the point is that this isn't a game with a ton of rules it's supposed to emulate a real fight and pretty much all fights end up on the ground.

All the fights I've been in didn't stay on the ground for long...if they did. And I haven't seen many fights become a 5 minute rolling on the ground fest...especially if it's a public place.

Look, all I'm trying to say is that most fights aren't street fighter 2.

                I love UFC.

But the problem with just sticking to boxing is that it simply isn't enough. And the "sport" has become more like wrestling, as far as pinning the opponent goes.

I've seen some good fights on that show.

Who was that quick lanky ripped guy who would keep arms distance with grapplers and beat the **** out of people's heads? I loved that guy.

well the thing about 'where is the martial arts' is that unfortunately most of the stereotypical things people think of as martial arts arent effective in a fight. at all. in the very first UFCs back in the 90s every single style tried to prove they were the best at it turned out

                    - wrestling
                    - judo
                    - brazilian jiu jitsu ('humping each other')
                    - muay thai
                    - kickboxing

were all the ones that actually worked in a fight. heres a good video of a wing chun (kung fu derivative) jerk getting kneed in an early UFC. like dreamknight said real fights end up on the ground, and the best way to win fights is groundwork. the first 3 UFCs were won by a tiny brazilian jiu jitsu guy who didnt know how to throw a punch. he beat people almost 100 pounds heavier than him. thats where the martial arts are. if you know a lot about it its very interesting and technical to watch

having said that there are a lot of good strikers in the UFC to appease the people who want blood!!! heres a cool fight where someone gets kneed/soccer kicked to the head a lot by probably the best MMA muay thai practitioner in the world

If someone happens to be watching it some time, I may sit down and also watch it.

But yeah, last one I saw was months ago, and it looked pretty much like how me and my brother would fight when we were seven.

Yeah, but they aren't UFC either. It depends on the style really.

Most guys try to grapple, so they can get a better chance to smash the other guy as if you miss a punch you risk getting beat(meaning they didn't learn martial arts). But I've seen many good REAL fights where people managed to stay up... Well, until they were knocked out of course.

Anyone happened to see the leg snapping vid? That was pretty funny.

why arent real fights like UFC? a real fight between two incredibly skilled fighters looks like the UFC. its just a competition with one person fighting another with minimal rules until one person loses. its not a specific style of fighting, it just happens thats the best way to win a fight (to the dismay of idiots who think throwing haymakers is impressive)

what do you mean by 'they didnt learn martial arts' though? do you think people who grapple dont know martial arts? i dont understand

I wish I could see Bruce Lee against these guys...he pretty much started the philosophy of using whatever works, was seen to have won a lot of real life fights, and was a PHYSICAL FREAK.
