    Revisiting Chrono Cross

I'm almost done with it for the second time. The storyline made a lot more sense and sat better this time around. I really like the overall storyline and theme of the game, and I think it tied in very well to Chrono Trigger (when I first played Cross I had not played Trigger). I would've liked it a lot more if certain things didn't just RUIN it for me.

I almost quit when it came to the "search the two worlds for the six dragons" fetch quest. It served no purpose for moving the storyline along or providing any real game play aside from making the game lengthier.

The battle system sucks. It's so terribly unbalanced. For most random encounters the normal enemies can barely scratch me (I don't even have Prism equipment) and only a few bosses gave me trouble (see: Dario). The whole system itself with the Stamina gauge and the Element Grid might seem neat, but it fails in its execution. Serge ends up being terribly over-powered. In my file (not even a New Game +) he's got almost twice as much STR than any other character in my roster, rendering most other party members useless save for Glenn and Fargo. And it's not my fault for over-leveing or anything like that. The game doesn't HAVE levels. So all of the balance issues? It's the programmer's fault.

And all the useless characters. Seriously. The game would've been better if they focused more on a central group of characters. Like Serge, Lynx, Kid, Harle, Leena, Glenn, Karsh, Fargo, Nikki, Riddel, Razzly, Korcha... the IMPORTANT characters. We don't need Turnips, Dogs, Straw Mannequins and Talking Mushrooms for christ sake.

But at least the music is nice.

The game just bored me to death. No other game has bored me as much as it. Which is a real shame, because it's a game that I want to like.

I didn't like the fact that characters would be useless down the road. I really wanted that alien in my party, but he sucked big time just a few hours into getting him.

My second time around was the best. If you ever play through again, name the main character Lynx.

I liked this game, but there is no way that I'll ever play it again.

            Fun fact:

You can't enter Serge's name as Crono.

Yeah, what's the point of having 48 recruitable characters when you can only have 2 interchangable members and only a handful of them are useful.

I've had Chrono Cross for a long while but never played farther than that first level that's before the game really starts.

Aw, I liked Starky or whatever his name was. I actually used him. As you pointed out, the game is easy enough that you can really use whoever.

Then again, I think my final team was ******, Serge, and Grobyc.

I actually kept Kid and Serge together. The other party member was the guy with the axe.

I liked Glenn. Equipped with the Einlanzer, he's a bonafide fighter. Also, Leena is a good one when equipped with the Frying Pans. I always get her before Kid because you'd eventually get Kid anyway later on.

One of my friends told me that if I really liked Chrono Trigger, I shouldn't ever play this game.

Whoa! You mean there are some people here who DONT think Chrono Cross is the 2nd coming of Christ?

                            Re: Revisiting Chrono Cross

I could go on forever about how bad an idea it was to have so many playable characters. What it boils down to is how many characters can the player learn to love? FF6 pushed the limit, but was so grand and epic, and also forced you to play all those characters. Crono Cross was kind of like someone in Square found a vault of old game character ideas and decided to make a game with a bunch of them and label it as a sequel to Crono Trigger so people would buy it.

I didn't really have a problem with the balance, but I also like my RPG's a bit on the easy side.

                              Re: Revisiting Chrono Cross

I will say again that Suikoden II did a better job of characterizing 108 characters than Chrono Cross did with 40.

That said, I've wanted to replay Chrono Cross for a while now. Aesthetically, it's God damn spectacular; just so ****ing colorful and pleasant. I remember liking the way stamina worked a lot, how you could just attack all in one go or pace yourself. I'm sure in reality memory has altered my perception quite a bit.

I have too many new games to play first. Also, I hate RPGs now.
