Live Action Evangelion - new "art"

    http://www.wetaworkshop.co.nz/projec...m/neon_genesis

my reply (not to the art, but to the idea in general) copied from another forum:

the art looks like crap. Misato looks like some sort of cave troll. the only decent art there is of the evas, and even then they have some massive ****-ups like giving unit 0 a mouth. it takes away alot of what made each eva unique. I dont think the artist has ever seen Evangelion, and this idea is only validated by the artist saying "toying with the idea of an Eva becoming a twisted version of it's former self" for an angel design. Hi, you're not toying with anything here, you're just doing an extremely ****ty job of recreating bardiel, one of the coolest angels in the series.

Eva should never have been touched with the live-action-stick. The series is heralded as being one of the best animes ever created. why sully it's great name with this? did Gainax actually approve this? did Anno?

I dont care what anyone says, this movie will be garbage. it could stand okay on it's own, if you pretend the anime doesnt exist. but the anime does exist, and as long as it does, this will be a direct insult to every anime fan.

next, lets make a 2 hour long movie based on one of 24's seasons. and then lets see if it makes any sense when we're done.

I'm sure the same was said of Lord of the Rings. Yawn.

I was actually just thinking about this live-action movie yesterday. I doubt they'd be able to cast actors the same age as the EVA pilots (14 years old) and I also doubt they'd be able to find young actors who can act a damn. At least, for this kind of dark-as-hell material. Unless they completely overhaul the dire circumstances involved and no kid will have to furiously masturbate or scream bloody murder or murder anybody in the live-action version. My bet is they're gonna up the EVA pilot age to early 20s or something like that to keep its essential darkness.

Then again, I doubt they'd do that for Ender's Game, which has similar themes and circumstances, and the characters are much younger too. Hmm.

I find this whole thing pretty interesting. And Eva's already been streamlined. Look at the fantastic manga by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

I've never understood the concept of making an anime into a live action movie. Anime characters cannot be replaced by real actors. It just doesn't work. Part of the anime's draw is usually the art style, and taking that away leaves you with just another live action piece of sh*t that can't compare at all to the original.

As for the art for the movie... uh, nice colors, I guess. Most of it looks rather bland and uninspired to me. And you're right, Valk, the people look god-awful.

but the manga still fits everything in.

personally, I dont think the most advanced CG in the world can do eva justice.

think about it, this is so far just going to be a one-shot movie. this means 2 hours or so to do a movie about Evangelion. likely made for the same type of audience X men and spiderman was. can you really fit what made eva eva in 2 hours, introduction to end?

        no.

my guess? it'll be big robots fighting a single angel. no lilith, rei will be a normal human. evas will likely be captured angels. there will be multiple attacks on the big bad angel, all of which will fail until they use some ultra weapon or things get really down to the wire and suddenly everyone decides to have piloting skill. they'll kill it. end of movie. shinji will probably have one of the other pilots as a love interest.

They stated before that this wouldn't try to tell the whole story.

I know that. but the point is, in eva, you grew really attached to the characters. you even hated shinji on occasion. will the movie get that right? will the movie have the same spirit, being a small fragment of the entire series?

I dare anyone to say that it will.

whenever anyone mentions a US company remaking a japanese property, I have flashbacks to the US godzilla movie. you have to remember, this movie is being made for that same type of audience.

if I want a chopped up version of eva that doesnt make any sense, I'll just watch death and rebirth backwards, thank you very much.

Like... movies of other anime series?

Like RahXephon and Escaflowne's animated movie titles, everything gets jumbled up and information gets changed to fit within the context of a much much shorter show.

Only they're making this live-action instead of animated.

I'm not a fan of the escaflowne movie either. the only anime movies I support are the gundam trilogy.

plus, this is by ADV. not gainax. not anno. ADV is in charge. other anime movies have their proper directors and staff behind them. not a localization studio.
