Basically, nanotechnology is the science of developing extremely small machines, called nanomachines, at an atomic and molecular level (which is pretty damn small), thus being implemented as something of a mecha-molecule.
Nanotechnology is still in it's infancy, however it won't be long before it becomes widespread. Already, it's being implemented in storage medians, greatly amplifying their capacity, among other things, inlcuding surgery. In the distant future, nanomachines could even be used to make buildings that can shapeshift and perform self-maintenance. That's a long way away, granted, but nonetheless.
That's just the tip of the iceberg, though. Personally, I find it a very intriguing field. That greyish pixie dust is cool.
