    Favorite Castlevania Games?

If you've played any of the Castlevania games, which one's your favorite?

I personally like Circle of the Moon, for certain psychological reasons I've mentioned on several posts. Just about all other Castlevania games pale in comparison to some degree or other, if nothing else because they work differently than COTM.

EDIT: I didn't put the 3-D games on there, partly because of space, and partly because, they're different from the other games, but I guess they could be included in the "anything else" catagory.

I think SOTN was my favorite, that or Castlevania 2.

      SOTN

I know a bunch of people hate it though because of its popularity.

I'd have to say the original Castlevania. So many good memories of late night Ramen-eating, Castlevania playing sessions with my best friend. We had to put a AA battery in above the cartridge to get it to play. Ah, yes. Precious memories of the early days of Nintendo glory.

Symphony of the Night comes in at a close second. That game was really sweet too. I never got the full what is it 200.6% complete. It wasn't my game. I borrowed it from that same friend.

SotN is my favorite, though I am pretty sure a large amount of what makes me think the game is "better" than the other games that followed it is simply the soundtrack and nostalgia.

Other than COTM and Symphony of the Night and Portrait of Ruin come in at second and third, respectively.

When I played Dawn of Sorrow, I started hating Portriat of Ruin for copying so many sprites out of DoS. Now that I'm playing Symphony of the Night, I now hate Dawn of Sorrow for copying many of those same sprites (Even the animations! Even Harmony of Dissonance had more dignity than that!) from SotN.

Castlevania IV all the way. I like a lot of the games in the series, but for sheer ingenuity in level design, the only thing that comes close to IV is Bloodlines.

Coming in a close second for me.....Dracula's Curse. It's been said that Koji Igarashi, producer of SotN, pins this as his all time favorite Castlevania game.

Third place....Bloodlines. The only Castlevania game made for the Sega Genesis, but an excellent Castlevania title nonetheless.

Fourth place winner....Curse of Darkness. It's definately an improvement over Lament of Innonence, and a huge, HUGE step past the N64. Michiru Yamane does excellent music for the Castlevania series. And I love Ayame Kojima's art style. Hauntingly beautiful....a perfect fit for a game of this nature.

                      Re: Favorite Castlevania Games?

Ugh, isn't Circle of the Moon the super cheap as hell Castlevania on the GBA? I remember fighting Dracula 10 times because his moves can kill you in 2 or 3 hits (especially that annoying ram attack), his moves are almost impossible to dodge (like when meteors rain from the sky in random positions), and he has massive amounts of HP. I think the only way I beat him was with that card setup that multiplies your defense based on how much of the map you cleared and even then I won mostly through luck.

Castlevania 3 is a personal favorite and while I love symphony of the night, I curse it every day for starting the metroidvania fad and never letting up.

I'm so glad Rondo of Blood is coming to the psp. While I had only played the msx version, it was clearly the toughest castlevania without actually being CHEAP like Circle of the Moon.

I like it when bosses are tough, but I like prolonged battles rather than one-hit wonders. Than charge attack in CotM is devastating, yes, but it's easy to dodge. If you have the Neptune card, than it becomes way too easy.

Other than Hugh and Drac's second form I didn't think CotM was too difficult or unfair.

And while both of them are hard to fight straight up, they die easily to the summon Thunderbird spell.

The best one is SotN of course but Simon's Quest is my favorite. I think you kind of have to seperate the Castlevania series into pre-SotN and post-SotN because of the shift in how the games are done.

I never played a Castlevania game all they way thought (my parent finished and sold every NES before I could touch it) but I remember loving to watching my dad play Simon's Quest.
