    Kidney stones suck...(icky personal story)

All of you younguns out there pray you never have to deal with major health problems. While having a kidney stone is a minor thing compared to the health problems i had about 10 years ago, god they hurt.

Last night, around 9pm, i started having severe pain in my side and my back, i figured it was just from the back problems i've been feeling at work lately, by about 9:15 i was writing on the floor. Thankfully, my roomie was here, and was able to get me to the hospital by about 9:30. They took me in there got me into the ward and got me on an iv right away. they gave me something called dilodid or something like that, still didnt help (i was screaming this whole time, i'm not sure, but this may have felt worse than the brain tumor), nurse hesitantly gave me a little more medication, next thing i knew i woke up an hour or so later, i had stopped breathing (appears that i am just as allergic to opiates as my mother is), but they got me going again, and i spent the next few hours vomiting everything i had eaten on wednesday. Took a CAT-Scan, and the stone was at a point where i could pass it.

Got home around 2:30, and i'm fine now(stone is gone), but I have had 1 stone before, and had never had anything that bad happen.

Ew. What are the dietary aspects to prevent these?

well part of it is hereditary, but basically drink water ALL the time. I drink lots of water, but periodically i may go days without real water, and i'll drink other stuff instead, (juice, soda, punch, etc). For most people, kidney stones pass simply, with the pain in the sides of your back(where the kidneys are) being pretty mild. In this case, wasnt quite so mild for me.

They also happen if you have urinary tract infections(which i dont think i have had any), basically, they occur as a result of high calcium content in the blood(may be why my bones are so freaking strong). So you just gotta be careful.

Whew.. jees.. Good thing I drink at least 6 bottles o CULLIGAN (best brand ever) water.
Good advice there! Hope ya never get those again.. Sounds like hell...

Also.. to prevent stomach problems (like me being dizzy 24/7 with constant chest pains for over 5 months.. still have it) do NOT eat anything with FAT in the evenings.. ever.

          yeah, water is the best.

I'm sure my pain would have been milder if i had just been stabbed in the kidney, instead of having a kidney stone.

Never had stones, hope I never do.

But I drink like a gallon of water a day. Otherwise, my high metabolism will dehydrate me very fast.

That really sucks having kidney stones. Well i drink water everyday especially Dasani water and the water we get at home Shay's something.

I think a kidney stone is just that, a hard organic blob in the kidney..?
BTW.. how does one get rid of something like that, if it were really intense/severe? An operation of some sorts? (or does medicine seem to heal all cases of Kidney stones?)

Ok I'm freaked.. Gotta get more of them darn Culligans..

you have to pass them. it's as exciting as it sounds.

there's medication to break them down, but in the end, they come out naturally.

And they're not all smooth like a pearl either. Not a smooth ride out.

Ive never had them, and I hope I never do.

and if they are large enough, they wont pass and surgery is needed. seriously, they look just like a small rock. I'm keeping it for when i make a doctor appt, i could take a picture of it if you want.

In my case, it was a semi large stone, and very slowly and painfully made its way from my kidney to my bladder, and it put me in excrutiating pain. So, went to hospital. Most of them dont arent usually that bad, the first one i had(about 10 years ago), was a little pain in my side, and it passed.

Anyway, you dont want them, simple as that.
