I've been trying to remember what animation this is for months, but for the life of me I cant find anything in searches, so I will try to describe it as best as I can. Some spoilers obviously. But I havent actually seen this in years.
I'm sure it was animated by a japanese company, but the animation style and character design itself was more american. I wanna say it was Toei.
A man wearing glasses takes some board game to either an antique or pawn shop.
The man is later somehow transported to a fantasy realm. Where he joins a small group in trying to stop an evil wizard. I think the board game itself was related to this realm.
The wizard is kinda short I think, definitely a lot more round in body shape, and wore a red cloak with a red hood. Either had a blue or more purple face, ugly ugly looking dude.
Later on, the wizard becomes more powerful, and turns into this three headed dragon (if not 3, it had multiple heads), but his normal head was in the center.
Now, the main guy couldn't beat the wizard normally, but as a man of science, must believe in himself that magic is not real and must prove each spell with scientific fact. But he was warned by this girl's dad or grandpa (he wore green i think, and had a long nose) that in doing so, he'd never be able to return to the fantasy realm. The hero proves all the things with science and ends up defeating the wizard (sounds cheesy, but oh well). One line the wizard said was something along the lines of "Deny me, and you deny all magic. Say it!" I don't believe they went to any castle or tower to fight the wizard, I just remember a large field.
The hero was then transported back to our realm, because his belief prevented him from staying in the other realm.
In the end, he's back at the antique/pawn shop, talking to the shop owner. I think they were playing the board game. I think he tried to explain what had happened. He's obviously down, because the girl in the other realm he liked, but couldnt do anything to go back.
He leaves the shop, and is surprised by the girl coming up to him. Her father/grandpa had let her go to our realm knowing she'd never be able to return so long as she could be with the main character because she ended up liking him too. She was blonde with long hair.
Now, I'm sure it was Mark hamill as the main character, or at least someone that sounded a lot like him. It wasnt a real deep voice.
It's an old film, and I'm thinking 80's, or maybe 70's.
I'm positive it's based on dungeon and dragons, board game and magic ad dragons, but google searches only came up with the D&D tv series. The one i'm thinking of was an actual movie, though I dont remember how long it was.
Now if any of you could make any sense of this and can help me figure out what the hell this is, I'd be thrilled. It's been bugging me forever. Maybe once I find out what it is I could see if they have it on video still for nostalgia.
