    80 ******* hours

A while back I got near the end of Dragon Quest VIII and decided "I'll finish this later".

So I got around to playing it today, and thought I was at the last dungeon. WRONG. Now I have to go orb hunting. Yippie. Then I can fight the final boss.

80 hours in and I still haven't beaten the game. Granted I only have to find these orbs, and I know where they all are, this is pretty lame.

I also love how they took the "Phyche Up" idea and turned it upside down face by having every boss in the second half of the game use an ice wave attack, thus negating any built up tension or beneficial effects.

And when a character is dead and you cast revive, just because they have armor on that can reflect magic doesn't mean it still should.

Only 140? You're so not hardcore.

Between my Diamond and my JP copy of Pearl, I've played Pokemon on the DS for a grand total of nearly 380 hours. Most of it in Diamond.

I recently picked up a US Pearl because my PC's boxes are nearly out of space.

I logged over 140 hours in FFXII, if I remember right.

Dang, I'm only 60 hours into DQ8. If I remember right, I just found out I'm supposed to find this bird or something. Also, I found the Tension deal stopped working too well after the first few boss fights.

That's okay. The Dragon Quest series are games that you either love or hate, and more often than not it recieves hate. At least in the US.

I wouldn't say that, Dray. Dragon Quest received a modest reception here in the US, and there are some who say they enjoy it better than Final Fantasy. In fact, I sort of consider Dragon Quest a rival to the Final Fantasy series.

120+ hours of fun. Had more fun with DQ8 then any recent game I have played.

                          Re: 80 ******* hours

Haha, guess what? You're not done yet! After you beat the game, sit through the credits to be prompted to save and you'll see a scene where that mysterious floating island thing is unlocked. Restart your save and go through the Dragon Trials to get the real ending.

And it's not some sort of tack on, either; the game is seriously only 80% complete once you beat the final boss. Everything about the main character, Argonia, and Trodain is answered in the real ending like the origins of the scepter and how the hero is immune to its negative effects.

But yea, the Dragon Quest series are ridiculously long. Dragon Quest VII being the worst because you have to go through each dungeon TWICE. Add on the fact that there's a lot of filler material, a lot of leveling up, and exploring to do and you have a pretty massive game series. I don't know why I enjoy it, though... Dragon Quest hasn't really changed much in 20 years but it still remains fresh to me.

                            Re: 80 ******* hours

I loved Dragon Quest VIII (I listed it in my top 20 games, after all), but even I have to agree that Ice Wave was the dumbest idea EVER. I mean, the one new thing you've added to the battle system and you then cut the knees out of it? Ridiculous.

Although if you do make the Timbrel of Tension it can become useful even with Ice Wave, albeit at low levels. You can generally get up to 25 tension in a turn.

The Dragon Trials, the later optional ones, suck massively. I can't even imagine doing the final one where you have to fight the first six optional bosses in a row first and then fight the seventh uber-boss.
