    My first game idea

My games isnt anywhere near completed, or better yet, barely started. But I have a feeling its gonna be great with a little advice. Id like myfirst rpg maker game to be great. So here it goes.

The main character, Jerico, Has been training for a few years, wanting to get revenge on the "dark knights" for enslaving his father. He doesnt know if his father is dead or not. (and neither do I). While out training one day on the other side of the island you come across "the wise man" who tells you "Protect your loved ones for they are next. And find the only person capable of turning the darkness to light, just as his ancestors did many years ago." This pretty much means, your hometown will be enslaved next, and the original king is the only one who can stop the dark lord. (the dark lord kinda overthrown the king so now he is).

Thats mostly what ive got, I kinda like the "Go out and save our town" but at the same time all he really wants is to save his father.

Any ideas? And i want random battles...but im hearing even on few theres a lot. Any ideas on this? Thx in advanced!

The idea of 2 kings pretty much having a war and no one really knowing where the good king is. I already said Ive barely started and that its my first game. I also said id like some feedback to help with the game. So before you post again why dont you just go ahead and brush up on your reading and maybe learn what some of this means. Your obviously having a bad day or its just that time of the month. So no harm done.

Not the greatest way to introduce yourself to the RPGM community bud.

Your story is very Wizard of Oz. (Go out to find someone, find some friends along the way, get into some trouble from the wicked whatever, etc.)

Well since it's your first game, here's my generic first game advice.

Make whatever game you can think of at the moment. Learn how to use RPG Maker 3. Let the game making itself inspire you. Work on presentation rather than content. Also, your first game will be awful.

I knew my first game wouldnt be great. But i also didnt want people to quit playing after watching the prologue. But you make a good point.

The best way to keep people interested in a game from the beginning is not really related to its story, it's all in the presentation. If the game shows in its prologue that it is a well crafted game, people will continue to play it.

Don't start the game out with text explaining the backstory. Show them something new. Throw them into the action. Think of good movie intros - what do they do to grab your attention?

                    Re: My first game idea

Id suggest making a few "dummy" scenes to get the hang of the controls and commands and stuff and then once you've got everything figured out then go for your game idea. That way your first game has a better chance of being good.

Is there a way to start the whole thing with a battle, but with a character not in your party. Kinda like a flashback or memory to the main character. Or maybe a scene in black and white.

Yes. You can have the game start with the flashback character and then after the battle switch the party members to the real main character. And you can do a storyteller in monochrome (b&w) or sepia but I don't think there's any way to make a battle or gameplay section black and white.

To me, that's the interesting part of what you have so far. If there are parts during the game where you can either do something to help save your father or to save the town but can't do both. Where the hero has to choose between doing what he wants and "the greater good", it's a lot more interesting than somebody who's 100% heroic.

You don't have any details down yet but that's okay, that comes later. When coming up with a story, especially for a game, it's good to work backwards. Figure out the beginning, who the characters are and how the situation gets started, then figure out how you want it to end. Then start to fill in the middle. Doesn't matter if you fill it in order or just randomly come up with things, as long as you pick a good place for it. The details like what to name the "dark knights" etc comes last so don't worry about that now. I hope that's helpful.

As far as random battles, a lot of people can't stand them. RPG Maker 3 has the best default battles so far but it's still not very good and you can't customize your own like you can in RM2 and sort of in RM1. My solution for my (eventually) upcoming game is to keep the random battles in a completely optional area so that people who hate them never have to do one but have good enough rewards for people who do choose to battle.

Im gonna take a day to plan this all out. Is there a way to make random battles only allowed in dungeons?

Random battles are only in dungeons and on the field map so all you have to do is not set any battles on your field maps.

kudos on this game first timer. my first game was you have to kill a bat. well really that game was to find out the controls.
Love is not something that can be bought it starts small like a seed and as two loving souls cherish the bond they share with one another only then can it blossom into a rose which in itself is as beautiful as love.
