How to find if your discs don't work

Hey, I was wondering the other day if there is any way to find out if a CD is damaged and unplayable without having to play through the entire game to see. Is it as simple as putting the CD in the console and seeing if it plays or do you have to play through the whole thing to find out?

Well, I would normally find scratches on my CD--that's usually the best indicator as if whether or not a game will work properly.

If there aren't any scratches, I can safely assume a game will work just fine. If I see the wear and tear, then I'm in trouble.

i dont think there's any real way you can tell unless the disc is totally scratched to hell. sometimes, i can look at the back of disc and think there's no way this thing could play, but it does. other times, there may be minor scratches or smaller, less abrasive damage that wouldnt seem to keep it from playing properly, but it does.

I know I've had discs that look fine, but don't play, and other times I've had discs that have what looks like a major scratch, but play. I guess the only way to find out is to play them.

Well I know Nero used to come with a CD sector analyzer, and I believe still does. Of course that doesn't always work either, as some of the sectors are unreadable on purpose (copy protection), so only way to be sure is to get to that part in the game.

At worst, if a game does manage to work even with so many scratches, it ends up skipping. That used to happen when I owned the first edition of Symphony of the Night. I couldn't fix the problem--not even the Disc Doctors could help the situation. So I ended up getting a new one, which was my last resort.
