    "Our" Military Heroes

Does anyone care to share about someone in their family or that they know that served in the military and gave their life for the country and what they believed? or do you have someone who is serving in the military now maybe?

-My uncle flew reconnaisance during the Vietnam war. His plane was shot down and his body was never recovered. For a long time he was listed as MIA (missing in action) or POW (prisoner of war). Since so much time has passed, he is now listed as being killed in action. I have one of the patches that he was awarded. I also have some microfiche documents (basically the records of the documents that were sent to his family, informing them of his military service through the years.)

-My brother is a serg eant in the Army now. He is currently stateside, but he could be transferred overseas. I hope not.

A lot of people fought for hitler only because they were more or less forced to, I wouldn't necessarily blame him.

Both of my grandfathers were in the big one (WWII) and had military funerals. I do not know of any medals that they received but I think one of them got at least one. Oh, and one of those grandpas was also in the Korean War.

Right now my uncle is over in Iraq doing maintenance work on military vehicles.

My great grandpa was the only one to survive some island-hop attack in WWII.

I don't really know the story, he doesn't like to talk about it.

I know Blackberry was about a couple hundred yards from never being born: her grandpa stayed behind to net some souvenirs while his comrades ventured into a Nazi trap.

All I can think of is, my grampa watched an island get obliterated during a hydrogen bomb test. Awesome!

                    Re: "Our" Military Heroes

I had at least two great-grandfathers that served in WWI, one of which took part in the last cavalry charge in American history (it didn't go well).

Both my grandfathers served in WWII, one in the pacific theatre, the other in europe.

I had a great uncle that served in Korea (my father's uncle).

My father served two tours in viet nam.

All of them came back, more or less in tact.

I've got family that served in the Civil War too, but the connections become a lot more tenuous. Nobody from my generation or the following has served in the military since.

Thanks for sharing the only family war story I had that's not top secret. And I'm not kidding about the top secret part... in a way.

The family has a gun and Nazi patch (I got the patch) that my Grandpa got from the above event. The rest of his team or what-not wandered into a trap and got killed will he was piltering from the dead.

My uncle was a prisoner of war and beaten with a log chain in Turkey.

That's what I was told anyway.

Both of my grandfathers served in WWII on the pacific front. One was a bomber pilot and the other was an engineer. I'm pretty sure there was some flap about one of them not being able to join at first because he was too skinny. :P

A while back, my grandfather was writing his will and he asked me what I wanted. I told him I would like the defused Japanese bomb he has. It's really crazy looking and it weighs a ton.

My uncle served in Iraq. He was National Gaurd and illegally called in like so many others. Lost 3 of his friends, has been exposed to depleted uranium, and there's a large chance they will call him back.

He's disgusted with the practices of our government. Halliburton was charging our soldiers $30 for a bag of ice, which you could get for a buck at a quick mart, $6 for a hamburger(like those crappy school cafeteria ones), $6 for a gallon of gas at some times. Taxpayers foot the bill, of course...

I hope they don't call him back.
