Why Virtua Fighter will never outsell Tekken

I may have made this rant before, but I feel the need to make it again.

Let me say first that I LOVE fighting games. I've probably played most of them out there, so that's not part of the issue.

Yes, the Virtua Fighter series is a very good fighter with its share of balanced characters and nice variety of moves. The problem is, the characters are very boring. Their personalities are so cookie cutter it hurts, and they're voiced by terrible voice acting. There's no soul to their movements, and while the animation is good and gets the job done, it just seems so...bland. I have to pull off a complicated button combination just to plain headbutt a guy?

So yes, that's the main thing...no personality. Hell, even the story mode of 4 was going to different arcades and playing the actual game. That's incredibly lame.

On the flipside, you have fighters like Tekken and Soul Calibur. The characters have back stories, different personalities, and yes, it shows in their fighting styles and movements. I can't wait to just do a regular throw with a new character to see what he does for this very reason, and usually what they do has a "wow" factor to it, where as VF's moves are just...there. No, they're not the best storylines, but it actually makes me care about the characters in a different way, thus making the whole experience that much more enjoyable.

In the end, VF is kinda like watching UFC and Tekken/Soul Calibur is like watching a Yuen Woo Ping movie. It may not be as fundamentally sound and authentic, but it sure is a hell of a lot more enjoyable.

    ...Back stories...?

If you can make sense out of those "stories" then you must be high on something.

I'll admit that the VR crew are a tad boring. But they are at least grounded in some sort of reality compared to Kon....

I've never ever played a fighting game and gone, "Wow! THESE BACK STORIES ROCK."

I just like looking at Ivy....that's my excuse for liking Soul Calibur....plus, SCII was only ten bucks when I bought it. I suck at fighting games, but at least I can beat SCII in single player mode.

I used to be into Mace: The Dark Age for the N64. Sue me, it was the best fighter out of the crappy lineup of fighting games for the N64.

That was quest mode(which was great, but incredibly difficult). The main mode(arcade) was much worse.

It doesn't take much to understand the storylines of each character in Tekken.

          Like for example...
Eddy's parents were killed and he was framed, so he goes after Kazuya for revenge. Before that though, he learned his current fighting style in jail from Christie's grandfather. Once he got out, they all met, granddaddy got sick, both Eddy and Christie fought to see who'd win the 5th KoIF tournament to pay for his operation, he lived and they all brokedanced happily ever after.

It's just that when you try to put stories like that together, THAT'S when it gets crazy. At least Namco attempts to make one though. Soul Calibur...eh, now there's a storyline that needs work.

I like Soul calibur's story, even if it is pretty much the same each time. Nightmare/Sigfried was always my favorite character, not only for the moves but because of the back-stories.

I like stories in my games. So what?

I honestly didn't know that there were backstories at all in Tekken or Soul Calibur.

But like Kire is right, the characters ARE boring. I mean I'd like if they put some effort into that in the future, but at the same time the games are still way better overall.

Forest Law wasn't boring in my opinion. Long live Tekken!

Yeah, Forrest is great, and Paul Phoenix is a lovable lunkhead. I love his special move where he attampts to do a flipkick and lands on his face, and you take a bit of damage (because of his relationship w/ the Laws). Also, if you have Law and Paul together in Tekken Tag, Paul can actually finish the flipkick.

Re: Why Virtua Fighter will never outsell Tekken

I think the real reason why Tekken outsells VF is because it's not easy to pick up and play for casual gamers like Tekken is. That's why VF is revered as one of the best by many hardcore fighting game fans and Tekken is considered a joke by even the creator of DOA.

Take your pick of any anime licensed fighter and you probably have a game with a much deeper and better story and more interesting characters with complex relationships than Tekken. Hell, take a look at Capcom and SNK's fighters for that matter.

The only fighting games I play are Mortal Kombat. Oh, and the original Soul Blade. I used to play Street Fighter on Genesis with my cousin but I sucked so I never liked it.
