    Myst

So I was digging around in my houswe the other day and I came across a relatively old computer relic. Myst. For those of you who don't know, Myst was one of the very first computer games to come on the CD format, and boasted pretty good graphics and (for some) addicting gameplay.

The basic premise of the game is that you found a magical book that was created by a man named Atrus, who has learned the skill of creating "linking books" that can transport you to bizarre (and often creepy) worlds, called ages. There's actually 5 games in total, the most recent and final being Myst V: End of Ages, which came out in 2005.

I've never played IV or V, but I own the original's of the first three, although have never beaten any of them because of the incredibly hard puzzles.

It's hard to classify Myst, but I guess you could call it a Puzzle/Mystery game, you go about operating machines to activate stairs, hidden doors, elevators, ships etc. to complete some sort of agenda. The story was actually pretty good, if I remember right, but it was full of tough riddles and puzzles that required reading of journals scattered around the game's islands to crack.

You can find a full list of all the games in the series here on Gamespot: click.

Anyway, enough of my spiel, has anyone else played this rather obscure game?

Obscure? I guess if you wern't alive in 1993 when it sold millions of copies and was featured in news stories and was THE big thing in PC gaming it could be considered obscure.

I played Myst and Riven. Both have story/world(s) that're on par with Elder Scrolls.

The puzzles are very difficult. I had to cheat in several spots to finish the games. But the end definately justifies the means. A very worthwhile game.. I just wish I could play 3 and 4.
      ...and that's why.

I bought Myst for Playstation (used) maybe 5 years ago. It worked pretty much like a computer screen. You used your controller to move a pointer on screen to move to different areas or manipulate levers and switches and different things. It took me a long time to beat, but I had a great time playing it.

3 has a weak story but the best puzzles and rewards in the series. I was able to beat it with no help at all (something I couldn't do for Riven and 4). When I solved the counter ballence puzzle in Amateria I was shocked that I had actualy manged to figure out the thing and proclaimed myself a genius.

That's how you know you're smart, Funk. Solve Myst 3.

I had Riven on PS1. Had to use a guide for most of it. Some of those things I just never would have thought of. It's one of those love it or hate it games though. People more into action than thinking can't stand Myst games. Anyone played that online Uru?

Doesn't Riven require you to learn a ****in' imaginary language?

Myst is one of my favorite PC games. You have a real gem in your hands there, Phoenix.

It truly revolutionized CD-ROM software back in the day. Simply because the graphics were well ahead of its time.

The only bad part is--once you solve all the puzzles, there's not a lot of replay value. Unless you want to spend time exploring the Ages, but that's not so bad. You get to revel in all the pretty environments and picture yourself as really there. It's nice.

Alright, not so obscure Everyone I've ever mentioned it too never heard of it, even though I knew how big of a hit it was. I just began playing Myst 1 again (the original), but I got to channelwood (I went there first) and when I went to save I accidentally quit -_-

But yeah, it's a great game. Whenever you figure something out by yourself you really do feel like a genius and want to tell everyone you solved it.

It's an awesome game, and I know you'll enjoy it very much. It's just a shame that the company that made it, Cyan, is falling on hard times. End of Ages was a bit of a letdown and it didn't sell too well.

I never got into Myst. I always thought the puzzles were too much guessing, trail and error.

And the first Myst was so lifeless. Give me some birds at least!
