    The Golden Compass

    First Trailer is out

*sigh* I already don't like it. There's dialouge out of place, Scoresby is way to old, there's not enough armor on the bears, and I'm a cranky purest aparently.

Normally I'm all about filmmakers remaking the stories to fit their imagenations/mediums. Heck, one reason I love Prisioner of Azkaban is because it didn't treat the book as holy writ.

But something about this just didn't sit right with me. Maybe I'm afraid that changes to the story will equal the story being dumbed down for convential movie-goers.

The first I've heard of it was through the video game adaptation by Sega.

The trailer was very interesting though.

I also expected Lord Asriel to be a lot older than Daniel Craig...I assume that's who he's playing.

But whatever, I won't make any assumptions until I see it. Would be interesting to see a cinematic version of Pantalaimon.

The only one of those issues that really bothers me is the bear armor.

I have a feeling I'm being set up to dislike this movie, though. The book is one of my favorite books of all time- especially insofar as it leads to The Amber Spyglass- and I get the impression the movie is more concerned with attracting new fans than placating old ones.

Well I know nothing about this story. So it puzzles me that you guys would be bothered about armor....on a bear....

Not a lot of emotion from those lines. Seem like it will be somewhat bland. Special effects were defintally stepped up for this movie. Strange they would throw that much money and actors on something that most people probably haven't heard about.

Shows how much you know. The 'His Dark Materials' series is extremely popular. The bear armor thing doesn't bother me. I don't nitpick. But I do agree with Vonwert on the lack of emotion in the trailer....

At least your book is getting the movie. I've been waiting on the Abarat movie for so long, now that CGI can finally do Barker justice. It was announced a while ago, then...nothing. 0_0

When I was reading the books, I imagined Lord Asriel to look like a more gruff and slightly wider version of the Sage model in RPGM3.

But I did like the books, all in all. The whole Daemon thing in the first book was interesting.

I'm kinda afraid to start up the video, since it's not the click-and-watch kind of movie. I'm not sure what it would so to my dad's computer.

Never read the book (though it seems everyone else in the world has) but this looks.... like something.

I may see it if only because James Bond and Vesper Lynd are back together again. And Sam Elliot, thank god, doesn't sport a British accent.

                    Sam Elliot's the best. x3

And I have mixed feelings about His Dark Materials, even though I enjoyed it. It's as aggressively atheistic as Narnia is Christian. When something has a religious or political agenda like that, it sort of colors my enjoyment of it.

I am going to be annoying and wake-up this old topic. I got to see the trailer when I saw POC:AWE (which sucked and gave me a migrane) and it made me want to see it. I don't know why I missed this thread before, but I gave the series another read and I'm hoping that I won't be set up with dissapointment.

As for Azriel: he has ALWAYS been young and handsome, not a sage. Plus I don't think that Nicole Kidman is going to do Ms. Coulter any justice for the simple fact that Ms. Coulter was actually blonde. I would like to see more armor on the bear, but I'll let that pass for the shear fact that they are going to have Iorick on the screen. Looking at the casting I'm not horrible impressed, but I'm willing to give it a try because I love the books.

Although they are thinking about cutting out the religion section of the books, probably to keep from ****ing anyone off.

Although people should visit the site. It has a way to test for your Daemon. Funny enough, I got a fox and my boyfriend got an osprey. What's your Daemon?

edit- forgot the site. http://www.goldencompassmovie.com Yay, flash! (If you want to skip past all the crap, just enter the site, choose your language and hit the ferret looking thing.)

Good lord you people complain too much.

I'd never heard of the books until I saw the trailer so for me the movie looks awesome. It's gonna have Daniel Craig, Sam Elliot, and giant polar bears that talk and enter contracts with children. I don't give a damn about how much armor the bears have so long as they've got armor.

Complaining about the quality of bear armor these days or religious agendas are for old women doing laundry. Wishy washy I say.
The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

I guess I'm complaining, mostly because I'm terrified about how they are going to explain the main plot without introducing the religious aspect of it, because it's the whole plot...I think. Although Iorick looks friggen awesome.

Wait why is taking religion out a bad thing?

Granted I'm only just beginning the second book but I didn't think religion played a big part in the story.
