Make a run for the border

No, this isn't about Taco Bell, it's about illegal immigration. The right wing loonies' new pet issue is that we have to close the southern border, and that all these illegal immigrants are going to screw up our economy er something. There's even a group of people called "The minutemen" trying to help w/ the illegal immigration problem.

The thing is, I haven't heard a counterpunch to this issue, and has very much been treated as a non-issue. Right now I see nothing wrong w/ tightening security down there and making illegal immigration have a harsher penalty, but I haven't heard the other side of the argument. Any thoughts?

i live down by the border where most of the minutemen are roaming and all that crap. as for a counter there really isn't any cause well the border does need to be tighten... a lot... many a times have i come back from a night in mexico drunk and only get asked "american citizen?" and replying yup, "ok, have good night". its hilarious. i feel sorry for the younger generation though... no more fun in mexico

While I do feel bad that they can't make a good living in their own country, I also think they should stop trying to come here. It's all fueling a bad growth in economy - cheap labor and Wal-Marts that ruin local small businesses.

No way, man, spanish is cool. You can talk about the gringos and they just sit there staring at you!

I don't know much (forgot most of it), but I was still able to help spanish speaking customers at the retail place I used to work.

As for immigration... tough issue. I feel very strongly about human rights, but I also think that if mexican citizens want to become american citizens, there are ways of going about it that don't require illegally entering the county.

If they would like to have a job here, then I expect them to do the same things I have to do, like pay taxes and be aware of our laws and rules. That's my only beef.

In order to speak Spanish, you have to lisp like an idiot. I'm not joking.

Also I think that we should simultaneously work with Mexico to increase the standard of living there AND tighten our border security. It's in our best interest after all. Central America makes you realize how good it is to be American.
