Can you pass a Defensive Driving test?

You get 5 chances to get each question right. (That is no kidding stated on the test.)
    Question:

    1. The leading cause of freeway collisions is _______.
    A. Driving too slowly.
    B. Speeding.
    C. Following too closely.
    D. None of the Above.

    2. What is the leading cause of death for age group of 33 and under?
    A. Cancer
    B. Suicide
    C. Traffic Collisions
    D. Smoking

As much as I loved it, it was time to change it.

Nothing against Nixon, but considering most all the other drivers on the road have their license too... and they still fail Defensive Driving courses... I mean, come on... look at that, is that really difficult?

I think they will pass you as long as you are still breathing at the end of the test.

A lot of drivers must come out not breathing then. xD they say a good amount of people fail. it's like... 30% or so of people who take the test.

I feel that if you fail a defensive driving course, you should be restricted to public transportation forever.

I had to take a court ordered defensive driving class, so yeah, I can and did SUCKER.

So are those the only two questions on the test? And 5 chances to get a 4 choice question correct ... and people miss it.

Well the first I can attest too, as it's the only thing I've ever gotten a ticket for, since when you tap someone in the back there is really no contest. Of course she did stop pretty damn fast, but whatever, all it did was slightly crack my headlight.

Re: Can you pass a Defensive Driving test?

I failed my defensive driving test just because I wildly did donuts in the middle of an intersection while firing a revolver at anyone who honked.

I think Kojiro has a point.

Agreed. Still, it would make me feel safer if people HAD to take a refresher course now and then. I may be the one to take public transportation soon just to keep from getting killed.

I go the speed limit and I use signals. I try to obey traffic laws. Other drivers tailgate me, swing in front of me (then stop to turn), run red lights, and blaze past me on the right (when I'm in a middle lane) going 90 and honk at me as though I was blocking them when there's a 4 lane freeway. -_-

There is no excuse for that. I consider such aggressive driving a threat of bodily injury. Hmmm... maybe I should sue them. Everyone is suing everyone else. That would make me even more offensive.

Re: Can you pass a Defensive Driving test?

People actually go the speed limit . I do get a little scared when I'm going like 15 MPH over the speed limit on the interstate (my average is 10 over on normal roads) and they're still passing me like I'm going the speed limit. But I think 10 over is still pretty safe, most roads you can do 10 over and still take all the turns fine. Also I've never gotten pulled over for speeding, though of course I slow down in the presence of a cop. Speeding in front of a cop is just dumb, though they certainly want you too, as cops are the worst tailgaters, cause they're doing it on purpose hoping you'll speed up.

Of course I normally keep a decent distance between me and the guy in front of me, cause I'm not a dick. Still not happy when I'm behind someone going exactly the speed limit, or worse under it, but it doesn't bother me all that much and I'm not going to ride their ass because of it, that's just rude, in addition to being dangerous.

But yeah I don't think I've ever hit 90, since I don't think my car would like it too much, and going 20 or more over is treading in dangerous territory of getting a ticket, and I think 25 over can get your licence taken away on first offense. But I don't think going a few MPH over the speed limit is going to hurt anyone.

Re: Can you pass a Defensive Driving test?

I go the speed limit or maybe a bit less because it tends to save gas more than anything. It's so expensive! I'm not trying to aggravate anyone. I just don't see the need to go so fast that I have shorter reaction time, risk getting a ticket or having an accident, and use up a ton of gas. I'm just being practical.

I do the same thing. 45 mph in a 55 or 60 zone in the far light lane, with engine off coasting on downhills and when coasting to stop lights or stop signs, ignition shutoff at stop lights, bump starting, not braking on highway offramps and coasting down them at speed, accelerating at about 2/3 throttle from stops and shifting up at 2,500 RPM, ect. All of these techniques together can increase fuel economy by about 50% over simply driving the speed limit and not using any of those mentioned techniques.

I only speed when necessity deems it, and in those cases am not afraid to go more than double the speed limit if the traffic conditions are right(and if I'm in the right vehicle of those within the household).

You should try aerodynamic modifications, synthetic transmission oil, machined brakes, 0/0/0 alignment, and low rolling resistance tires. All of those combined can increase fuel economy more than 50% with no adjustment in driving style.

Doing both driving technique and modifications is how some people on gassavers.org and elsewhere can manage 80+ mpg.

If your car is OBD-II(basically any car made 1997 or later), there is something called a MID-II scangauge you can buy for $250 that measures fuel consumption from your electronic fuel injection system. This has allowed people to fine tune their driving style to maximize economy.

You'd be surprised to find that an internal combustion engine is actually more thermally efficient at high throttle than at low throttle. Look at a brake specific fuel consumption map for any Otto cycle engine if you don't believe me. However, the lower the RPMs, usually the lower the fuel consumption as well. As a general rule of thumb, you want to accelerate between 1/2 and 2/3 throttle from a stiop and shift up at as low an RPM as you can while making sure the engine doesn't lug when you shift to the next gear. Obviously, with an automatic, you won't be able to use this and other techniques.

On a recent 120 mile trip to purchase some recreational items(lets just call them party favors), I was able to get a normally 18 mpg vehicle(at 60-65 mph) to average 40 mpg for the trip. How? 45 mph in 5th gear in the far right lane on the highway, and when going through towns where the limit is lower than 45 mph, obey the speed limit and stay in top gear. At a steady 35 mph, I calculated on paper I would be able to get 50 mpg. While I don't know whether the vehicle really gets that for sure at that speed in 5th, I do know for a fact that at 35 mph, aerodynamic drag force is greatly reduced, and since you use less power to maintain a speed, you use a lot less fuel. At 60 mph, it sucks down fuel like crazy from all that drag(.48 drag coefficient. I'll be glad when I get the Triumph going so I'm not using my parents' POS truck).

Again, this low speed putting through town at 35 mph to get good gas mileage won't work with an automatic because the torque converters will lock into a ratio that keeps the RPM high. Automatic transmissions are designed to keep your engine in the proper operating range at all times, so that you can quickly accelerate in an emergency.
