i thought this was pretty cool. i entered a small piece at poetry.com and got a letter today saying its been accepted for publication in a volume titled Immortal Verses scheduled to be out in summer 2007. sounds good to me! :)

The Sleeping King

Sir sire king once had dream,
while he was sleeping outside and down by the stream.
Overwhelmingly moved by what he had seen,
surrounded by lights and mysterious beings.

He fell in love with their beauty, so decent and clean,
repulsed by his kingdom, his people and queen.
"How can I catch these angels I've seen?
By sleeping forever inside of my dreams."

I mean not to detract from your poem, it is very well written and I enjoyed it myself but, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poetry.com.

Yeah, I got exciting in the tenth grade when I got my first letter from Poetry.com. I never bought the book, and after the third poem that I got "published", I figured it was a scam.

Don't think of it that way. Be proud that you did good work. Try submitting your poetry to literary magazines or something, I'm sure they'd like them.

Yeah I remember when I wrote some, and actually got suckered into buying 2 of the anthologies in high school. Guess I never stopped to think they could be publishing anything. After I heard the news story about a whole 2nd or 3rd grade class that got everyone of their poems published, I was not very happy.

So yeah they suck, and should be more forward about the fact that they publish anything.

For those interested, my two 'published' poems, which are probably 7-8 years old at this point

---------------------
Love
Love is a strange thing
When it is good to you
It makes you want to sing
And makes the world seem perfect.

But when the tides are turned
It makes the world seem like a pit
And it seems as though your heart is being churned
Into a bloody, pained mass without remorse.

When there is no love at all
It makes the world an empty and lonely place
And it seems as if everyone will let you fall
And you will never feel like caring for anyone.

It seems that love through all the suffering and pain
Overcomes all of these obstacles
And always brings us some gain.
Even the loves that are lost apply here.

Only a foolish person would go through life
Without love because it is a great thing.
Through all the pain and strife,
It overcomes them all and is the greatest thing in one's life!

---------------------
(this next one is kind of sing songy, and probably a bit sappy)
I Just Wanted You to Know
I just wanted you to know,
That I really love you so.

I've wanted to tell you for so long,
But I couldn't find a way so I'm doing it in song.

I can assure you this love is true,
And if you choose to be with me, I'll be there through and through.

I might not have a lot of money to give,
But I'll try to be creative and surprise you with gifts.

I'll always try to keep you joyful,
And keep an open ming and be playful.

I'm putting my heart on my sleeve,
And asking you to be with me.

Om hoping you will say yes, and not no,
'Cause I don't think I can deal with the sorrow.

Just know the love I feel for you is deep,
And consider this in your sleep.

And give me your truthful answer tomorrow,
But don't feel mad at me though,
'Cause I just wanted you to know.

---------------------

Yes I couldn't get through that second one without laughing. Oh unrequited high school love. I did give that to a girl, but sadly she said no. However I got over it, a long time ago.

So yeah, that's my poetry prowess :p.

TTC's not only a tech guy, but also a poet! Alto's got some competition. He'd better watch out :)

Manji, your poems are very nicely written. They deserve publication.

I like to dabble in a lot of things, mainly because my interests seem to change with the wind (well except programming, that seemed to stick). So I do have a somewhat creative side in addition to my highly logical one. I have two others I wrote a while back as well (though they weren't 'published' as I found about about poetry.com a bit after the second one), would start a topic but not sure I'm in the poetic mood these days, but maybe it would help me come up with some new basslines, so maybe.

But yeah that seems pretty good Manji. Of course the definition of poetry changes all the time and seems to encompass almost any writing at times, so I never know what is and isn't considered it anymore, even more so what good poetry is.
