Did you try the paint bucket? It's an alternative button for the gradients spot...click holdto switch. Or were you being sarcastic...?

Hahaha I think the beauty of it is I cannot draw well so it makes it even more charming.

Hold shift. Hold shift before you start drawing a line to do a line either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally (based on how you start drawing), or click one spot, hold shift, then click another spot and it will draw a straight line to the from the first to the second point.

You have to click-hold on the gradient tool to find it. It's a perfectly reasonable problem to encounter.

i've only ever used it for mild edits, and usually don't need to draw a straight line for that ;P
