    SD card question (Wii related)

    I thought a lot about getting an SD card for my Wii to stash stuff because my Wii's internal memory is getting close to its capacity. Then, I remembered that I already own two SD cards for my digital camera--one being 8MB and the other being 512MB. Since I already have two SD cards, I'm a little wary about spending the money to get the ones manufactured by Nintendo (a lot of them cost $40 to $50 I think!). My VC catalog is chugging up my internal memory, and I'm going to start putting my VC games away so I can make room for new downloads. Plus, I don't want the save memory storage of my Wii games (like Super Paper Mario) to suffer. So my questions are....

    Do I need to buy a Nintendo manufactured SD card, or can I use the SD cards that I currently own for my digital camera? And since I already have some data from my camera on both cards, can I still use those SD cards to supplement my Wii's memory files? There's no concern with corruption or interference, right?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Yeah, you can backup your save files and your media onto your SD card.... any will do. I know you can't have your games read data directly from the card, though.... beyond that, I couldn't be sure.

    I am coming for all of you!

      you can use any SD card.

      Nintendo doesnt make SD Cards though. the ones with the "switch and carry" logo on them are made by another company, but officially licensed by nintendo. and then there's the Wii SD cards that SanDisk makes that are rediculously overpriced. the only thing different about those are their label and plastic color.

      I use a PNY 32MB SD Card I grabbed in the K-mart checkout aisle for $12 to transfer virtual console games to my PC for storage. before that, I used the same SD Card my dad's digital camera uses.

        That's great! It saves me the trouble and the money to buy one Thank you so much.

        Oh, and the Wii can't read game data from SD cards as goldgecko implied, right? They don't function like a GameCube or PS2 memory card would when they read game data directly from the card, do they? Because the SD cards "geared for the Wii specifically" have me wondering if there were some slight difference between those and the SD cards I use for my digital camera. But I don't know--I'm not a hardware expert like truecoolness or anything ^_^;

          no, there's no difference at all.

          You cannot play games stored on an SD card. you basically put the games on the SD card to get them off your channel menu so you can add more. you can then move them from the SD card to the channel menu later on in the data management screen.

            So basically I works like a Max Drive then? I have a 1 GB SD card I bought from Best Buy for $15.
            I want that Mulan McNugget sauce, Morty!

              Yeah, and you can get bigger ones for pretty cheap. I got a 2 gig one for $50 with a $50 rebate, but without rebates they're a lot less.

                Ah, I see. Well, at the very least, I take comfort in knowing I don't have to delete my VC catalog to make room for new downloads.
