Imagine my surprise when I walk into Best Buy today, not expecting to find anything, only to find a new release of Dario Argento's Deep Red (aka Profondo Rosso) sitting in the Horror section of the DVDs. Deep Red is probably one of my favorite horror films, much better than 99% of the slop being shoveled to teens these days. First of all, the film isn't a teen slasher, it's full of adults and aimed at adults. Secondly, it's full of clever shocks and death sequences (the scalding hot bath is a favorite) that Argento (Suspiria, Phenomena) is known for. Thirdly, it features Dario's wife, Daria Nicolodi in a typically bat****-insane performance. She can't really "act" in the normal sense of the word, but she certainly turns in a performance that's memorable. Fourthly is the exquisite tension certain scenes are imbued with, like David Hemmings' exploration of the abandoned house. Fifthly (?) is the rockin' soundtrack provided by Argento stalwarts Goblin. Some real cool tunes, IMO. And sixthly is the clever twist to the identity of the killer that Argento actually played fair with: he gives you all you need to figure out the secret early on, if you pay close attention during a certain scene (my first time through I almost blinked and missed it).

All in all, I think it's a fantastic purchase for the $11.99 I found it for. If you're fed up with the types of horror films being released today, give this a spin. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
