We all know I've been a very harsh critic for the way sony's been handing their newest console, so I figured that I should post my opinion of it now that I actually own one.
I'll note that I have the 60GB version.
The system itself
Incredibly heavy. it's 10lbs. I had to clear things off my desk because it couldnt fit on my bookshelf with my other consoles without potentially breaking the shelves. it just didnt feel secure up there. Pretty sure it's bigger than the original X Box too. But lets get past it's size. It's sexy looking. very much so. the chrome and super-relfective surface are great. But there's a big problem with the design. it's a dust magnet. literally. on or off, you can see dust flying at this thing. you put your hand above it, and you can feel static electricity on your hand. is this safe? is this even right? I have to wipe my PS3 down constantly to keep the dust off it, and I find myself covering it with a pillowcase when it's not on to keep it clean.
the fan is pretty loud at times, and it blasts some very hot air out of the vents. amazingly, even after 10 hour gaming sessions, the system itself doesnt get hot. I wish the same could be said for the Wii and both PS2 models.
The media card slots are pretty fancy too. somehow, the area under the flip-open media bay sucks up more dust than any other part of the console...
Controller!
hate it. too light, and the new L2 and R2 buttons suck. PS3 has to be on to charge the controller too, won't charge in standby mode. Oh, and the sixasxis motion support? it's horrible. in the few demos I've played that support it (motorstorm and resistance) it's glitchy and not always as responsive as it should be. if the teardown photos of the PS3 controller didnt drive the point home that it was just tacked on at the last minute, it's implementation in the games will. blaarg.
Playstation Network
Free online play is good. somehow having my "Valkysas" account broken minutes after going to download GTHD is not. my e-mails to support being ignored for a solid week is also not good. so I have two accounts. one broken, one working. one has a "1" at the end. I understand this isnt even a documented problem, but it happened to me, and that angers me.
other than that, I have no complaints about the Playstation Network aside from the selection of PS1 games, and that Sony is for some reason delaying downloadable content for Oblivion. everything else is very nice. the transformers trailer being available in HD on the playstation network isnt swaying my opinion either... much.
Games
I still honestly believe that there are no exclusives for the system that are worth owning. some people like resistance and motorstorm, I don't. the only games I own are multi-platform. AC4 and Oblivion. AC4 has slowdown. Why the hell does AC4 have slowdown. it's worse than the 360 version in that aspect. Oblivion has faster load times than the 360 version, and you can see further too. Oblivion is very pretty.
Oblivion has crashed on me three times so far today. I suspect I just have a bad copy of the game since the PS3 didnt give me any problems at all during the file conversions for the pav, or for AC4. I'm taking it back tomorrow to get a new copy.
EDIT: I'm not blaming the PS3 for AC4's slowdown. Looking at footage from many other games, it's fairly obvious that it's the fault of From Software.
Final thoughts
honestly, I dont feel it's worth it's price. especially with the current game lineup. nothing I've seen or played so far has "wowed" me like the transition from PS1 to DC and PS2.
It's a good system, but its off to a very rocky start, just like the PSP was. overall, I'm happy I have it, and it makes a fine secondary system (the Wii is my primary)
Obviously I dont hate Sony as much as I appear to at times, and hopefully me owning this will make my complaints about sony a bit more "valid" to people who have rep-bombed me in the past for being a "biased nintendo fanboy". I guess I'm a lot like Jeroak. He's primarily loyal to Sony, but owns every console he can because he's a fan of video games more than any individual company. I'm the same, but I'm mostly loyal to Nintendo.
