You weren't born in the 80s.

I dont believe the time frame a game was made in or the system it was made for has any impact on if a game is "better" or not. I personally have a lot more fun with the PS2 than I ever did the NES or SNES.

You're completely wrong. Games are better today, in general, because more advanced technology has allowed for better creative and technical execution of fun gameplay ideas. Katamari Damacy, for example, wouldn't have been nearly as good on an NES. World of Warcraft, if it could have even existed ten years ago, wouldn't have been the some amazing place. None of the RPG Makers as we know them could exist. And of course, since games are more expensive to develop nowadays, the companies--believe it or not--do require of themselves a whole lot more quality then back in the "good old days."

People have a tendency to forget the mediocrity of the past and focus on both greatness and tragedy--and in the case of video games, there's more greatness than tragedy to be seen. The same bias leaks into all art forms and into peoples' views of society as a whole--but people who have actually seen a good sampling of the art in question in both time periods are much less likely to have that wistful vision that the best times are in the past.

On the whole, I'd rather have two random games developed today than ten random games developed in 1990. And for that matter, I'd rather live in a time where polio can be prevented with a simple vaccination.

Games were good back in the 80s and 90s like mario zelda etc my favorite is called final fantasy for the nes such a good game. but then mario world came along then zelda link to the past and so on they are all great games

I have to admit the nes had pretty horrible games like dr jeckle and mr.hype nightmare on elm street which was a nightmare but i still enjoyed playing the nes

A Nightmare on Elm Street for NES was horrible.

Lame premise of collecting Freddy's bones(that somehow float in the air). Being attacked by bats that drop rocks on you when you're supposed to be awake(and not on drugs). Zombies that look like Elvis. Floating Freddy head that sends disembodied tongues after you. End boss that just consists of every boss in the game in a row.

But still, I played it. I beat it. Multiple times. Recently, even. What the hell am I thinking?

I know I mentioned this game in the past, but you want to talk about a good example of bad game design, it had to be Time Killers.

Yes, it was very bloody, but also very flawed in its execution. Stiff characters, poor character designs... I tried to find some good in it, but no such luck!

These days In the arcades, Time Killers can be played for free--no tokens or quarters. A used Genesis version I saw at a smaller game store can be bought for just a quarter--about the price of a small cup of coffee....which I'd rather buy than this game.

If your arguing from the stand point that games are now overly complex, and that simplicity is superior, then yeah, I think you could say they're better.

I think all eras have their gems.
