What is Game Maker or Flash?

The title says it all. I've been wondering, what are they and how are they different from RPG Maker? I heard them mentioned when Simple Man wanted to make a Castlevania type game.

I want to make one too. And I want to know all my options.

Well Game Maker is another game making framework which is basically a piece of software which has a lot of tools to help you make a game, including basic event handling, and a scripting language. So it's like RPG Maker, but more general.

Flash on the other hand is a full fledged scripting language from Adobe. It's what all the videos and such you see on the internet, and can be used to make some decent games. But it would be harder to learn given it's a general programming language (well specifically for the Web), but doesn't have any specific game making functions. I'm sure you could find a framework online but you'll be making most of the stuff from scratch using the functions Flash gives you.

Everything on Newgrounds is flash if I'm not mistaken.

Correction: Having delt with gamemaker for over 6+ years now, i can say that it has its own scripting language just as much as flash does. Gamemaker allows you to pretty much make whatever you can think up, from OS's to Online games. Flash can be use to make videos, games, websites, etc.

From what I understand, the biggest benefit of Game Maker is that it lets you create your game from the ground up without limitations. Of course that can be a double edged sword as well.

So why not just use a real/full programming language??? Just saying. So I guess that means it's just a programming framework/library, with a nice IDE. Of course I don't really know much about GameMaker, but that's because if I were to make a game on the PC I would just use C++, or Java, or PHP/Javascript if it's a web game. Then again I like making things completely from scratch, so.

As for the OS comment, you could probably write an OS in VB, but I really doubt there would be any takers on that, and it's a 'real' programming language.

Re: What is Game Maker or Flash?

The Game Maker is extraordinarily innovative. I downloaded it once to see what it was like--you can make a shooter, a puzzle and a top-down racer--simple games of that nature.

For me, it's difficult to understand the scripting language. There's a lot of things about it that need learning. Even studying existing games is confusing for me. However, I'd really like to try and make a small game someday.

Game Maker is a wonderful way to help an aspiring game designer get started.

You can basically make any kind of game you want, including 3D games. However such a task is difficult.

Game Maker has quite a few flaws as well(such as bad product security), which might force you to try another suite, depending on your needs.

I've used Game Maker and pretty much outgrew it, because I could do anything in 2D, solely using GML. I don't like using 3D because I'm a 2D man - it's simpler to manage and easier to make decent graphics without a ton of overhead(and you can draw them all in MS paint, yay).

I'm going for the Blitz line of products now. They're more powerful than GM, they use a legitimate language and while they do cost quite a bit to obtain, I believe they'll be worth the investment. Many commercial games also use Blitz, and the language doesn't seem too difficult for someone like me who is very familiar with something like GML.

Personally I wouldn't use bare bones languages like C, because I hate having to do tedious grunt work that others have already completed. And if I don't, why bother using such a language when there are better alternatives with less hassle? I look for stuff like Game Maker, not because I want a quick dev fix, but because I want to concentrate on making games in my vision, not reinventing the wheel. I don't mind having to create main loops and manage objects and fields, but drawing individual pixels on the screen and initializing APIs? Not my thing.

The only reason I can see where languages like C would be valuable is the mainstream gaming industry, where you aren't "allowed" to use tools like GM. I'm not aiming to be in that industry though, so I don't see the point. If I do happen to gradually learn such a language through other things, more power to me.

Well gamemaker can create some really professional games:

I like GM, it's free and fun to use, not overly complicated and has a simple interface. Making my own sprites and stuff is easy and it has some sample games you can use to help along with your project.

Can't play the game, file not found.

Though from the feedback, your game probably needs a lot of work. I'd give you the source of a shooter I was working on, but I don't have any documentation on it(and it's all in GML), so you probably won't understand much of it.
