Look at the numbers. compare the total CPU numbers, and look at how much the PS3 is processing.

it's insane. 158943 windows machines are participating in this. currently, they're doing 151 Teraflops. meanwhile 10238 PS3s have done 251.

the PS3 is making a HUGE contribution to this program. way to go, sony.

If only we could apply this power to a "video game console," a type of machine that has a wide variety of very entertaining games. I would assume this kind of power would help them make a lot of really good games.

On one hand it's nifty that the PS3, far cheaper than most PCs, can actually process more of this stuff, though of course they're all much newer than MOST Pc's as well.

On the other hand, not only is this not going to contribute to its (the PS3's) success, but I doubt most people will be ready to use their game console that much like a PC for another few years.

Folding@home (also known as FAH or F@H) is a distributed computing project designed to perform computationally intensive simulations of protein folding and other molecular dynamics simulations. It was launched on October 1, 2000, and is currently managed by the Pande Group, within Stanford University's Chemistry department, under the supervision of Professor Vijay S. Pande. F@H is one of the largest distributed computing projects.[1] The goal of the project is "to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases."[2]

Basically, it's a program spread over a bunch of people's computers that map out stuff for disease research and similar things.

Basically, the stanford servers have the main info, it downloads the information that it wants to be analyzed to individual PS3's and then once it is complete, it sends it back to the stanford servers.

A single PS3 is operating at 24,516,507,130 BPS(24.5 GB/Sec.) whereas a single PC is operating at 950,026,109 BPS(950 MB/Sec.)

Meaning on average a PS3 processes data over a network about 26 times faster than a PC.
