    ..... (computer issue again)

How do I turn off the Dr. Watson log?
I've heard it's supposed to record bugs and errors and whatnot, but...

This is just insane. It takes up all remaining space on my drive. I've had this thing get to something like 4.7 gigs before.

How can I stop this thing?

I would say run drwtsn32 (Start -> Run), then set the number of Errors to save to some low number (like 5 or something). Unchecking Dump All Thread Contents might also help to reduce the size. Also uncheck Append To Existing Log File, as this should create a new log file on each error, instead of continuing to make a large one (I assume this would overwrite the old one but am unsure of the actual effect of this).

From what I've read it looks like drwtsn32 is not always running (apparently it is in XP by default), unless it's in your startup tasks for your computer. Though also not sure about that, all I know is I don't have a log file on my computer at all (Win 2000).

So of course the best problem would be to figure out the error and either uninstall that program, or find out how to get it patched, but barring that this should keep the size of your error log small.

As for the log itself, information on what is in it is here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246084. Just don't actually try to open it in notepad (use a competent file viewer that won't try to load the whole file in memory, just to fail).

Just went ahead and did all that now. Hopefully that solves that.

      Thanks.

Out of curiosity, what's with the kanji? I get that you have the yen symbol replacing the slash....

When you install the East Asian language pack those get replaced with Japanese symbols for some reason, though only in specific fonts (MS Mincho or MS Gothic). I noticed this when I type on IMs now (Trillian), since I had to set my font to those in order to be able to type in Japanese. So I guess whatever separators he used for his dates in regional options get changed into kanji characters as well.

            It's because of this:

I was messing around with some programs that wouldn't install unless the system was set to Japanese mode or something...never switched it back after I did a bunch of stuff. I usually end up crippling my computer by messing with the settings too much so I've left it alone.

Well I now know 日 (hi [hE]) means day, so I would imagine the other two mean month and year respectively. Been trying to learn Japanese, and just started getting into some Kanji today. Interestingly enough the symbol 日 is also used in the spelling of Japan 日本 (nihon [nE hon]). It also means sun.

So did you buy some Japanese software, since I know to write and read Japanese I have not had to set my computer to be Japanese, just change my keyboard input mode. So you should just be able to change that option to English (United States) assuming you don't have those programs still installed. Just tried it on my computer and switching it to Japanese did change the long date format to what yours looks like.

                Start -> Run

                type "msconfig"

go to the startup tab and disable it

PS: does XP even have a run command?
