How Do I Play AVI Files?

What do I use to play AVI files?

I have a digital camera that records AVI files but WMP doesnt support AVI's, and neither does IE

Everytime I try to open one it asks me to save or open, when I choose open it redisplays the dialogue box

WMP plays .avi on my computer.

    Download Divx.

Media Player Classic. With the right codecs it will play ANYTHING. Even without any it still plays lots of things.

Yeah most things will play AVIs, but AVI is not a codec, it's just a file type, so you still need to find what codec the AVI is using. Then if you don't have it you'll have to download it from somewhere. Codecs are a pain, since installing a large codec pack can mess up viewing of a lot of video files.

There is a program called GSpot that will help you determine what codec a video file uses so you can see which one you need http://www.headbands.com/gspot/. It's also compatible with Vista 32-bit.

If neither of those programs work, go for the VLC media player.

            Here is a link: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I use it to play all of my files, and they generally play anything from .avi, .wmv, and I believe it's even able to play .mkv and .ogg files if you happen to have some in your possession. Good luck as well.

If you're looking for a good codec pack, I'd suggest Matroska. Since I installed it, I haven't found a single file that MPC couldn't play.

Re: How Do I Play AVI Files?

I installed the mjpg codec for windows media player, but now the computer returns a blue screen anytime I try to play a video and it restarts the computer automatically.

                DivX isnt supported with Vista

Now my next problem is fixing WMP, is there a way I can uninstall the mjpg codec or do I have to reinstall WMP altogether?

Ill try the other 2 suggestions and see how those work out

EDIT, I installed VLC and got the same thing I did with WMP, it would play the audio just fine but not the video, I did upload the AVI to youtube and youtube converted it to a playable format, but thats a lot of work transferring videos to youtube.

Where do I get media player classic?

I think this codec pack here has that player.
                  Not sure though, so.
