    Turn based or real time?

How do you like your role-playing game battles? Turn based or real time?

Personally, for me, I enjoy a good real-time combat system--simply because you don't have a lot of time to make strategic decisions and are forced to fight with what you have. They're very exciting and involved. Games like Secret of Mana and Rogue Galaxy make great use of a real-time combat system.

On the other hand, I also like the strategic element of a turn-based combat system--like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior. Here, you have time to plan what your next move is, and figure out what items/spells/special moves to use. Then, you watch the battle unfold right before your eyes!

If I had to choose a favorite, I'd go with real-time, simply because it keeps me on my toes.

What are your opinions? Which do you like the best in RPGs?

Personally, I like to pace myself and strategise in RPGs, for the most part. Planning out your next move can be pretty intense.

Why only have one or the other when I can play FFXII? :3

        I really don't know. I'm torn.

See, I like real-time like in KOTOR quite a bit....but it makes boss battles extremely anti-climactic. They end up just feeling like yet another battle, albeit longer. That was one of my major problems with FFXII. Even KOTOR was really lacking great boss battles.

I also give the real time edge to KOTOR over FFXII, if only because I can stack commands in KOTOR which actually allows magic to become a viable option because you can simply stack a ton of spells instead of having to carefully watch and wait for every action to finish before selecting a new spell.

On the other hand, I love the ATB.

Overall......I think I'm more in favor of the ATB.

Turn based, espeically in a tactics game. I'm all about the tactics.

As I mentioned in another post, I like real-time for two reasons:
            1) Whether or not my character dodges an attack depends on my skill rather then statistics and chance (then again, there are games like Zone of the Enders: the Fist of Mars).
            2) It's possible to not survive being stepped on by a dragon. It's odd when a lone character can stand toe-to-claw with something 20 times his/her size.

I may like turn-based games if the battles don't degenerate into, as Ryner said "attack, attack, attack, victory".

I'm gonna have to go turned based on the whole, although I love the battles systems in KOTOR and FFXII.

Turn based. I tend to suck at RPGs with real time battles. Especially Rogue Galaxy. And you either end up switching characters which is confusing or having them run by AI which tends to be stupid.

Many real-time games end up like that too.

The best part is that you can go make a snack and get back in time to see the end credits.

I really don't care one way or the other. I'll take TB over crappy RT any day, and RT is easier to make crappy on a console, so TB for consoles, and RT for PC.

Maybe, but I haven't played any games like that (at least I can't think of any off the top of my head, unless you're thinking of something like KOTOR2). Mostly I've played games where (at least during boss battles) I have to attack while dodging enemies' attempts to end my life, like in Castlevania.

Real time for me. I like how any action affects the battles, and that you have to think on your toes, much like real life.

                          Isn't Castlevania a platformer, though?

We're talking about RPG's, like Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, and KOTOR.

Oh, okay. In that case, I would choose TES4: Oblivion as an example. Lately, though, Castlevania games have had some RPG elements, such as a leveling system.
