I only ever saw it once. I think it was on Nickelodeon’s Special Delivery. I also saw it for rent in a store back before Blockbuster destroyed the mom and pop video places. So this was back in the late 80s, early 90s.
It was an animated movie about ants. In this movie when the ants reached maturity they would grow a thorax and choose what profession they would want to do. The hero was a good hearted but lazy guy who hadn’t grown his thorax yet and didn't really care. All his pals were getting theirs though and the adults had pretty much written this guy off as a looser.
Then he falls down a hole into a cave and finds a crystallized ant egg that had rolled down there years before. He lands on it and it hatches into an ant colored blob. Well the guy gets the idea to stick this blob on his ass and pretend that it's his thorax. And h=for his profession he finds out that he can play this strange musical instrument that requires lots and lots of skill and talent. Everyone is very impressed by his musical skills so he ends up in a band. But then, at the big show, the fake thorax/ant fetus thing starts getting into the music, hops off the guy's butt and ruins his disguise.
I never got to see the end of it. But I remember that it was really good and it's stuck with me all these years.
