When i try to play RPG maker, it starts reading the disk and making a LOUD buzzing-esque noise. I can't stand it. Why is this happening?

My bad, my bad..
RPG Maker 2, nearly mint, no scratches, on a 4 year old PS2. Enough info?

older PS2s have a hard time playing CD ROM games like RPG Maker 2. they're lighter than DVDs. I reccomend putting a thin, even layer of scotch tape ontop of the disc (not covering the hole) to weight it down a bit.

Cool, I've heard of that, so I know exactly what you're talking about.
Now, to go on my own adventure. One to find the mythical "Scotch Tape" I've heard so much about :P *starts searching house*

No go, I put the stotch tape about 4 different ways and none worked.
Strange part is, I've never had this problem before...

your lens is likely aligned wrong. you can fix this yourself (DANGEROUS!) by looking for info on the net, there's some pictorial guides out there. or you can call sony, and they'll fix it for free.

Why does it only happen with RPG Maker 2? I was just playing DMC3 with no problems...

I have no idea.

Dang it, this is annoying me. Disgaea, DMC3, FF10, and Soul Caliber 2 all work fine, but RPG Maker 2 is being annoying as ****. The only game I want to play right now won't work.
Ah, whatever.
Thanks a ton for your help :D

if you're hell-bent on making your own game, and dont feel like getting your PS2 repaired to make one, you can always wait a few months for RPG Maker 3.

Problem there is that I have a half made game with like, 200 hours of work already... on RPG Maker 2.

Disgaea, DMC3, FF10, and Soul Caliber 2 all work fine, but RPG Maker 2 is being annoying as ****. Those games are on DVD-ROMs (silver disks), while RPGM2 is on a CD-ROM (blue disk).
I had the same problem as well. Got my PS2 fixed for it. And then once my PS2 got skrewed up again, I just went and bought a new one, two days before the slim PS2 was announced.

Same thing happend with me. :(
Edit: Sony's number is 1-800-345-SONY and they WILL fix it for free, under warranty or not. Others may say differently, but roughly 2 years ago they changed their policy to accomidate for their **** up.

Alright, I guess I'll have to get it fixed. As far as I know I did nothing to void it O_o;;

I have the same problem (without any buzzing... the thing just hates to boot up).
My solution was to just keep trying. I put on a cool video (Space Giants!!) and after each "Disc Read Error" I just reset and let it fail again. I usually need 5 to 10 tries, but it does eventually boot up (and I have another excuse to watch my namesake on television!) and I can work on my game.
It's a pain but it works.

Is your PS2 laying flat or is it vertical, it makes a diference. Also start the PS2 without a game in it, press /\ and set diagnosis ON. Sometimes (although rarely) this will help. If that doesn't work then give Sony Tech Support a call and find a local Sony Repair shop or send it in. Good luck!

That's not encouraging. I hope mine does not devolve to that state.
Have you tried what Final Rune suggested? The bit about Horizontal vs Vertical placement of the PS2 is valid. I get much better results "standing up" even though I HATE having to do so. I just dislike the idea of fighting gravity. You always lose. Gravity sucks!
I have not tried the diagnosis bit, but I'll do so when I get home and report on what happened tomorrow.
Peace.

Actually, I read that standing it verticle makes things worse.

Yes and no. Generally you don't want your PS2 standing vertical, it can lead to future DREs. However, like with the PSX standing it vertically can have an effect on the lens, sometimes realligning it properly. If this works then great, but its important to note that this solution is only temporary. The only real solution is to get your PS2 repaired.

This is getting interesting. So I did a little research.

In response to an inquiry about a "Mod Chip" I found this bit of enlightenment:
If you want to boot the game with your console in the standing position and then lay it flat, that's fine. I've never heard of a mod chip that would cause such a problem, but that's what you and your friend get for trying to bend the rules. Heh heh. The rumor about the PS2 scratching discs while standing vertically is true. We've had it happen to one of our games here in the office. Consequently, we always play them lying flat now.
From now on I lay mine flat after booting Vertically!
