What Konami should do with the Silent Hill series

    Silent Hill Origins

    "Let's make it like RE4"

Screw you Konami. You can take the camera angle from RE4, that's a plus. The old camera sucked hardcore. But don't make that the only "innovation".

Do something original Konami. Like incorpoate more survival aspects into the game, instead of making it into the massacare that the past games have been. Include "sanity effects" ala Eternal Darkness minus the Mental Health meter. Ditch the notes and memos you find throughout the game as a method of telling the storyline. It's been done too many times. Ditch the lame fetch quest puzzles as well.

Back to Eternal Darkness and the sanity effects. That was a great idea, but it's execution failed. "Hey, my green meter is low that's why the game is acting screwy. Let's just cast magic and heal myself." So it never caught you off guard, you knew it was coming. Imagine playing a Silent Hill when things shift into "dark" Silent Hill, where anything can happen and the game messes with you hardcore. Throw in a bunch of instant deaths and chase sequences, but with an improved continue system instead of starting out where you last saved to prevent frustration. Etc. Etc.

I think that the series would benefit greatly if they got a gutsy director behind the helm. Granted, this game hasn't even been released. But I can tell exactly what's it's gonna be like. They need to embrace what makes the series special, instead of copying the broken formula's from it's predecessors.

I'm severly dissapointed in Konami as a company. Castlevania, Silent Hill... I love those franchises but if they continue to shell out uninspiried sequel after another and run the series into the ground I'm going to lose hope. In Portrait of Ruin and Silent Hill 4 they even recycled areas--it's insulting. The only reason Konami is still thriving (IMO) is because of Hideo Kojima.

Sanity effects would just turn Silent Hill into a carnival, like the hospital in SH4. SH4 WAS inspired, but they just couldn't take the idea to the finish line.

I agree with you totally, which is why I hated Silent Hill 4. The angle was so fresh, but geez, it feels like the game's development team just said "let's finish this as quick as possible".

I'm gonna have to play SH4 again to see what you're talking about Mora.

Remember how the hospital's second floor was basically a house of horrors? The ghost effects in the apartment is as close to sanity effects as I think SH should get.

ETERNAL DARKNESS!! THAT'S a game everyone loves but I don't! Too bad I FORGOT ABOUT IT LOLLO LRORLFLFOLSLFSOFSLRORL

With the exception of pulling the plug on MGS Online I think Konami's done a lot of good lately, especially with Portrait of Ruin, MGS: Portable Ops and I hear Lunar Knights and Elebits are pretty good. And hey, they're releasing their classic TMNT arcade game on XBox Live Arcade!

So really I think the problem just lies with the Silent Hill team. They've clearly jumped the shark.

Luckily Silent Hill: Origins is in development hell and if we all cross our fingers it'll just fade away.

They have no idea what to do with it anymore. Which is understandable, I wouldn't either.

I think they should look at Silent Hill 2 and ask themselves how they can do that again.

Silent Hill for the wii would be pretty cool. I can imagine franticly swating at things with wii mote.

SERIOUSLY. We had great ideas. |:3

And my treatment of the Silent Hill movie was better than the one they came up with.

I just don't understand why we aren't in charge of everything.

edit: You too, IRC. I agree. Silent Hill 2 is the benchmark.

I'd love to see them continue with using notes and memos to tell the history of Silent Hill. But I agree that the story should be mostly dialogue and cutscene based. I didn't care much for how they took what should have been cutscenes with two-way dialogue and turned them into in-game events in SH4.
I think they should look at Silent Hill 2 and ask themselves how they can do that again.
I second that. While the "main" plotline was okay in 1 and 3, 2 stands out as the best story. 4 seemed to be their attempt at making another SH2, considering it was another side story presented in a way you don't normally see survival horror. Unfortunately, they changed the presentation style so much they ruined it. Plus they got lazy and made you play the same game twice and made you babysit all the way through the second half of the game.

I've seen video of it on youtube, and it's laughable. It looks (and sounds) like a fan-made game.
