Hardest Fights?

After getting my ass handed to me in seconds in one of the final fights of Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal, it made me think about other difficult boss battles.


So what fights, boss or otherwise, have you found difficult? I'm not just talking about the classically difficult (i.e. the secret WEAPONS, Nocturne's secret optional final boss, etc.) I'd also like to hear WHY you found the fight difficult.


For me, this particular fight kind of took me by surprise. I thought I had a handle on it, until the particular fiend summoned up about 10 helpers behind my front line fighters and killed my mage in about 5 seconds. Then my healer, right behind. It's like all of a sudden I just heard that wonderful death-sound and knew I was screwed (In BG games, raising someone is a major ordeal....it's extremely costly and nearly impossible in BG1, and it remains a major hassle in BG2).

Chrono Trigger's final Lavos boss. Even with my characters maxed out in level, he was still a pain in the ass. Had those damned satellite bits on each side that kept healing him and doing whatever it was that dealt about 2,000 damage a pop or something.

Also, good old Sephiroth is a tough customer no matter which game you fight him in. FF7, KH, KH2.....no wonder he's a popular name for MMO characters. What makes him so tough? His sword. About twice as long as his whole ****ing body, and he hits HARD with it. I mean HARD.

Yunalesca in FFX put up a good fight the first time I faced her. Don't remember why now. Think it had something to do with zombies.

Front Mission 4. If you have played the game, you'll understand. I thought I could beat at least 10 levels or so before facing anything that taxing.

Xenogears gave me a tough time.

Redrum, Id, Ramsus & Miang and Deus all wiped the floor with me more than once.

Xenogears gave me a tough time.

Redrum, Id, Ramsus & Miang and Deus all wiped the floor with me more than once.

I did that, too. The Monk is extremely helpful in that Wiegraf fight.

Throne of Bhaal did have some very tough battles...

Gill in Third Strike stands out for me. The first time I KOed him, only to see his Resurrection special attack, I nearly killed myself.

Oh, and the first time I fought the Wiegraf battle I had saved just before and only had the one slot, so I kept losing and was pretty stuck. I finally beat him when I changed Ramza to a Bard and equipped him with the harp that heals you every time you attack with it.

The trick is to throw weapons at him. I threw two axes and the fight was over.

Koudelka's.... about any boss. The game is so unbalanced it is rediculous. And whoever came up with the idea for having breakable weapons needs to be shot. The good weapons aren't the easiest to find and once you do they don't last long. Making boss battles become a real pain real fast.

Shadow Heart's Meta-God (final boss) is definitely one. Probably the sole reason for this is because she has an unreal amount of HP and all of her attacks have some type of status effect. Plus, some attacks that take down your MP and SP as well. Even with Yuri's best fusion, which has a nasty attack that does 999 damage each time, the fight still takes me nearly an hour to beat.

DMC3 Mission 19 boss. I swear he is a ***** to fight... I find him even harder than the final boss. Kind of hard for me to explain as to why, though.

Twisted Metal 2 Dark Tooth. He is one big mother ****er! But if that wasn't enough, he has a lot of crazy attacks that will hunt you down. Too this day he still scares me ****less.

I had to start FFT over because of this. And I thought the trick was auto-potion.

The only recent difficulty I've had with video games was Gilgamesh in FFXII. Only took me a few tries (and putting his dog to sleep).

Oh! Another hard one is the various optional superbosses in Dragon Quest VIII after you beat the game. The first isn't so bad. The second almost made me want to cry as I had characters dying almost every other turn as the boss could kill people in one hit very easily, and the fight is ridiculously long. I didn't even bother trying the next 6.


It did bring up the one thing that bugged me about that game, though. Pysching up was supposed to be the big battle innovation....and then all the final bosses did an attack almost every other round that would wipe out any energy stored, making psyching up completely useless. Way to cut your battle system off at the knees, Enix!
