Why the Japanese don't like the X button..or xbox..

    http://www.joystiq.com/2005/08/30/pl...ning-in-japan/
Apparently, the common meaning of the PlayStation buttons was lost in translation. To any non-Japanese gamer, the buttons are just geometric symbols, but they have a deeper meaning in Japanese culture. Similar to how the tick and cross marks are used in the West to denote correct and incorrect, three of the PlayStation buttons are used in everyday notation. Here's the breakdown:

    Cross (batsu) = "no good"

Triangle (sankaku) = "weak" OR "average"

Circle (maru) = "good" OR "satisfactory"
It always annoyed me how a lot of japanese buttons had O as select button. X is just a much better local IMO.

Even in America I think of O as correct and X as of incorrect.

I kind of liked and adjusted my games to be similar of that as much as possible because Final Fantasy VII was the first Playstation game I ever played.

The X is evil looking. It means....

"induces a hideous death curse to those who push it."

Well, Japan's issue with the Xbox is very different.

In regards to the buttons, they were meant to hold a significant meaning, and this meaning is applied to almost every game released.

It's different here, though. I thought X = marks the spot, and O = NO WAI.

On a majority of the games X is usually the accept button and O the cancel button, its been like that since the NES days, except with A and B

X is just a lot more convienient to tap then the O button, so its common sense to put the most used button at the easiest position

I think MGS is the only game series I've played lately that uses the O button for confirmation.

This is like how nobody in Spanish speaking countries would buy the Chevy Nova.

I thought buttons were labeled so that you could just tell them apart and locate them on the controller?

ABXYZ? L1-3? R1-3? Square, Circle, Triangle, X? They all sound pretty generic to me. What meanings people give them are purely up to game designers, since they're the ones who map the controls and give the option to the player to map their own controls.

Hmm does'nt sound much different from the SNES controller except for the annoying L3 and R3 buttons.
There is one thing that pretty much disturbes me in an SRPG....

Yeah, that's about the dumbest **** I've ever heard.

There's plenty of logical reasons why that the X-box fails in japan.
