    PS3, rug, YOINK!

This isn't a death nell for PS3 or anything but Sony definitely just pulled one of the rugs out from under it. You know how people have been defending the price tag saying "it's the cheapest Blu-Ray player you'll find." Well, no longer true. Sony announced a new model BD player and reduced the price from $999 to $599. Now obviously PS3 is still a great deal since it's Blu-Ray + games + web surfing and other features for the price of this player but this is a blow. My take on it is they don't expect the PS3 to single handedly carry the Blu-Ray medium to success anymore. Who'da thunk?

I think this move is more likely to entice people to get a PS3.

Lots of people here hate the PS3 for no reason, I think it's sortof retarded. You get what you pay for in the console. Maybe they stuffed too much into it, but you really do get what you pay for. I agree with RPGD, this will probably will make more people consider getting a PS3.

...How? You're still getting a deal with the PS3, just less of a deal. It actually makes it LESS attractive, not more.

It depends on whether the consumer is looking for a BD player or a BD player with an HDD that can play games.

Wait, does the BD player have an HDD?

Like I said, it doesn't take the deal away, it just nerfs it. Instead of getting a BD player for 2/3s of the price, you're getting one that can play games for the same price. Still a good deal, just LESS of a good deal.

I think its because this price makes people think more about getting a blue-ray, and then it's "well, for only 100 dollars more..."

It is true that in direct contrast, the BD player deal is a better deal. However, since it's price is pretty much the same as one of the PS3 packages, some people might just look at the convergence capabilities and choose the one with the most "arms", if you'll excuse the expression..

I think the thinking is that with the lower price, people may actualy being to think about getting Blu-Ray instead of simply deciding that it's too expensive. And then Sony may be hoping that if people are beginning to think Blu-Ray, when they go to look at the player and realize that they can get a PS3 for the same price that does more, they'll go for that.

                  It kind of makes sense.

I never said the BD player was the better deal. Find where I said that. :P And since the PS3 and BD players are the same price (I don't know where that $100 difference came from), I think that the MAGNITUDE of the savings is reduced. Which it is.

Pardon me, I was referring to when you referred to the PS3's package being less attractive in contrast to the BD player from a savings standpoint.

I think we're getting mixed signals here.

                          Fix it.

You're saying that like it's ever stopped you before.

Seriously, though, I just think that the consumer will just look at the prices and choose the one with the most bells and whistles. Most of the aforementioned will likely have never noticed the BD player's original pricetag.

Then again, there ARE those hybrid players those other persons are working on...

                              Hmm...
