Re: Console Power Consumption
Does it really matter? You're probably looking at a difference of a few dollars over the course of a year using the PS3 and 360 as opposed to the Wii. Besides, look at the games the Wii is playing; we really haven’t seen one game that couldn’t have been shown on the Cube.

You refering to the graphics, right? Cause a few of the games could be presented on the GC, but would otherwise be unplayable (such as Wario Ware Smooth Moves).Originally posted by Chrono 101 View PostDoes it really matter? I wonder if the controller has anything to do with it (even if it's not much of a difference)... The PS3 and 360 controllers aren't wireless, are they? So they'd use up some power, while the Wiimotes would use batteries."Those who want peace must prepare for war."

Re: Console Power Consumption
All 3 are wireless.
As for power it's not the projection of the graphics graphics that make it consume power, rather all the running motors for the hardrives, cooling fans and the like. A 1000 watt lightbulb running for 24 hours takes up less power than a simple ceiling fan for ten minutes. Wii is smaller than all the rest so of course it takes less power to use.Last edited by Red Dragon; 02-21-2007, 05:27 PM.

Re: Console Power Consumption
Nobody said it "matters". I just thought it was interesting. I don't really consider it as something for Wii to brag about or anything bad with PS3 and 360.Originally posted by Chrono 101 View PostDoes it really matter? Re: Console Power Consumption
Lets determine how much money in electricity each year each system will cost.
Assumptions:
a) Played an average of 3 hours a day
b) On standby an average of 21 hours a day
c) $.10/kWh electricity cost
d) Plugged in 365 days a year
e) Assume Wii has connect 24 on
From the chart the Xbox 360 consumes 185W during play and 2.5W in standby, the PS3 uses 194W during play 2W in standby and Wii 18W during play, 10W in standby.
So each year, the XBox 360 consumes 222 kWh of electricity, PS3 228 kWh, and Wii 96 kWh.
The XBox360 will take $22.20/year to run, PS3 $22.80/year, and Wii $9.60/year.
Over a 5 year life or so, the Wii will save you a bit over $60 over its competitors from electricity costs.
Some states like California, electricity is as high as $.20/kWh. These savings would be even more significant with the Wii.

I'm starting to love the Wii more as I learn more about it... That car I'm building? 228 kWh would be enough energy for it to travel roughly 1700 miles at highway speeds. Basically, if I bought a PS3, it would consume each year about 1/6 the energy needed to drive a small electric car 10,000 miles per year. Amazing how wasteful that is.Last edited by The Toecutter; 02-22-2007, 01:55 AM.The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson

A little more, actually.
***edit***
I recall measuring its voltage and current with a DMM and it's about 250W. But I don't use the computer to play games much anymore. My PS2 takes care of that.Last edited by The Toecutter; 02-22-2007, 02:12 AM.The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson
